Some Documents (cont.) Agreement for membership New members sign an agreement for membership in order to join 6 new members since 2004 3 new members during EGEE EGEE JRU workshop, 1 December, 2006, Brussels
Some Agreements (cont.) Individual Memorandums of Agreement signed when Institute or University has interest in establishing Grid sites or developing Grid applications using resources of EGEE or SEE-GRID projects Bottom-up approach Membership in BGGC is not required for signing such agreements. EGEE JRU workshop, 1 December, 2006, Brussels
Promotion of GridsGrid Events • GRID Workshop in Bulgaria: “EU Grid projects and Bulgarian Participation”, October 30-31, 2004, Borovetc. • Purpose: • To disseminate the ideas and to spread technical information for the EU projects EGEE and SEE-GRID • To present Bulgarian Grid-related projects • To discuss the activities of the Bulgarian Grid Consortium • 57 participants (project team members, representatives of the BG Grid consortium, interested parties, BAS officials, journalists, etc) EGEE JRU workshop, 1 December, 2006, Brussels
Follow Up events motivated by the Workshop • EGEE Dissemination day dedicated to EGEE applications, 29 June 2005, Sofia, with lecturers: • Dr. R. Berlich (FZK-Karlsruhe), • Dr. R. Hopkins (NeSC, UK) • Dr. E.Atanassov (IPP-BAS) • Grid presentations at institutions – members of the Bulgarian Grid Consortium • Institute of Mechanics (2004) • Plovdiv University (2004, 2006) • American University in Bulgaria (2005, 2006) • University of Economics in Varna (2005) • University of Mining and Geology (2006) • IPP-BAS (2004, 2005, 2006) • Grid presentations at the major international conferences held in Bulgaria – 8 conferences (2004,2005,2006) Grid members expressed interest in: • Establishing Grid sites • Development and deployment of Grid Applications • Education and training EGEE JRU workshop, 1 December, 2006, Brussels
Events aiming at winning governmental support • National Information Day on research Infrastructures, Organized by the Ministry of Education and Science (Directorate “Scientific research”), InterEXPO Center,Sofia, 15 July 2005 • Successful projects and good practice in Bulgaria (A. Karaivanova, “EGEE – the largest RI project. Bulgarian participation”) • South East Europe Regional Workshop: "Towards long-term sustainability of the European Grid Infrastructure".19th April 2006, Athens, Greece, with participation of the chairman of the State Agency for Information Technology and Communications(SAITC) • IEEE 2006 JVA International Symposium on Modern Computing, 3-6 October 2006, Sofia, Under the patronage of Mr. Georgi Parvanov - President of the Republic of Bulgaria EGEE JRU workshop, 1 December, 2006, Brussels
Results • Expansion of the Bulgarian Grid Initiative • New members of BGGC • Institute of Astronomy (IA), • Space Research Institute (SRI), • University of Mining and Geology • Agreements with 6 institutions (and counting) to install Grid sites and support grid applications • Institute of Mechanics – BG02-IM – EGEE production site running since January 2005 and porting Grid appls. • Faculty of Physics and Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, Sofia University – BG05-SUGrid – EGEE production site since January 2006 and porting grid appls. • Institute for Molecular Biology – porting Grid Applications. • Institute for Organic Chemistry – porting Grid Applications. • Institute for Astronomy - SEE-GRID site and porting Grid Applications. • American University in Bulgaria – porting Grid Applications, training site. EGEE JRU workshop, 1 December, 2006, Brussels
Results (cont.) Bulgarian Grid Resources: • 5 EGEE production sites • IPP, IM, FMI, INRNE • After start of EGEE II added new cluster with 80 CPUs and low-latency Myrinetinterconnect for 24 CPUs – unique resource for special MPI jobs • Will be upgraded with Myrinet connectivity for all nodes with a new national project BG04-ACAD (80 CPU) BG01-IPP (21 CPU) The BG GRID sites were built with the strong support of the State Agency for Information Technology and Communications and Ministry of Education and Sciences (National Science Fond). EGEE JRU workshop, 1 December, 2006, Brussels
Experience with our JRUs • During the SEE-GRID project, we had one third party. • In SEE-GRID 2 we have 2 JRUs, and in EGEE II we have 2 JRUs. • The good collaboration achieved during EGEE with • Institute of Mechanics, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, • Faculty of Physics and Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, Sofia University lead to the acceptance of these institutions as JRUs in EGEE II. Our experience is that it is very important for the leading partners to have established good collaboration on formal and informal basis with the JRUs previously to the start of the respective project in the areas of interest. We selected the partners for their unique expertise in certain fields. Too thin distribution of effort among many JRUs must be avoided. EGEE JRU workshop, 1 December, 2006, Brussels
Experience with our JRUs • Difficulties: • Coordination of work performed is complicated • Coordination of the financial distribution (AC model) • Legal issues JRU1 Administrative head of the institution↔team leader JRU2 • Administrative head of the institution ↔team leader Coordinator Director↔Supervisor : . JRUx Administrative head of the institution ↔team leader EGEE JRU workshop, 1 December, 2006, Brussels
