What is the MIGC? The MIGC is a non-profit, volunteer organization for geoscience professionals, intended to provide a forum for identifying solutions to the major data and software-related problems and issues facing the mining industry. CGKN - March, 2006
The Problem • Companies hire geoscientists to find orebodies, NOT • To clean up data • Search for missing data • Wrestle with incompatible data formats • Try and figure out where the data came from and how good it is • Etc., etc. • Support staff are limited or non-existent CGKN - March, 2006
MIGC Goals • Create an effective, sustainable organization • Share knowledge and experience • Provide focused feedback to software vendors • Identify and endorse Industry Best Practice • Provide guidance and feedback to government agencies • Coordinate with related groups – CGKN, OGC, CGI., etc. CGKN - March, 2006
Key Industry Issues • Data management • Metadata • Data interoperability and transfer • Document management • Sarbanes Oxley and NI 43-101 CGKN - March, 2006
History • Initiated by Placer Dome • First meeting in San Diego in Aug., 2004 • Subsequent meetings in Perth, Toronto, Vancouver • Tomorrow is 2nd annual PDAC meeting CGKN - March, 2006

Government Data What We Would Like to See
Government Data • We need: • A complete, easy to search catalogue • Clean, reliable data • Available in most common formats • Standard format metadata • Easy access – downloadable as well as CD/DVD CGKN - March, 2006
Tenement Change Detection • Western Australia tenement data • DOIR provides a fully-attributed SDE export file to an FTP site that Placer Dome imports to their SDE change detection database • Worked with DOIR to ensure we could directly read and use their data • DOIR notifies us of any planned changes CGKN - March, 2006
In Canada • Preliminary discussions with BC and Quebec surveys • We need reliable polygons with full attributes CGKN - March, 2006
