WHAT ARE FACILITATIVE AND DEBILITATIVE EMOTIONS? • Facilitative emotions– these feelings contribute to effective functioning. (Help you feel better) • Debilitative emotions– These feelings detract from effective functioning. (Make you feel crummy)
WHAT ARE SOURCES OF DEBILITATIVE EMOTIONS? • Physiology • Emotional Memory
WHAT IS SELF-TALK? • Self-talk--How you talk to yourself to interpret what is happening to you. • Debilitative self talk is also called rumination. That’s when a person dwells persistently on negative thoughts which intensify negative feelings.
WHAT IRRATIONAL THINKING CAUSES DEBILITATIVE EMOTIONS? • Fallacies- accepting a number of irrational thoughts. (false way of thinking) • Fallacy of Perfection • Fallacy of Approval • Fallacy of Shoulds • Fallacy of Overgeneralizations • Fallacy of Causation • Fallacy of Helplessness • Fallacy of Catastrophic Expectations
HOW CAN YOU MINIMIZE DEBILITATIVE EMOTIONS? • Monitor your emotional reactions • Note the activating event • Record your self-talk • Dispute your irrational beliefs
