The Affects of Steroids in Sports Brett Pais Tim Hulings
Introduction The use of steroids in sports is a growing issue today Knowing the consequences for taking steroids, many athletes are still taking them behind the lines Many attempts have been tried to stop the use of steroids in sports In the end many are still getting away with it
What are Steroids? There are two main classification of steroids Anabolic-artificial version of male testosterone Only legal through prescription
Anabolic Steroids Used to treat muscle mass depletion Athletes use anabolic steroids to add on to the muscle they already have Can have harmful side effects to the body
Corticosteroids Examples of corticosteroids are cortisone, and prednisone Doctors prescribe these for inflammation in the body Not similar to anabolic
Commonly Used Steroids Androstenedione Primobolan Tetrahydrogestrinone Clenbuterol DHEA
Androstenedione Steroid often in relation to athletes Made from a naturally occurring steroid hormone Little scientific evidence to support its effectiveness in improving sports performance
Primobolan(Methenolone) Commonly used in Major League Baseball by athletes Alex Rodriguez was convicted of using this form of steroid Builds strength without noticeable muscle size
Primobolan(Methenolone) This steroid can be taken by injection or by pill, Known for having few to none side effects. Methenolone-favored by athletes because it helps an athlete maintain a leaner look
Methenolone Improves the efficiency of muscle contractions Doesn't convert to an estrogen in the body Estrogen-related side effects, for example acne, aggression, water retention, infertility, breast development, do not appear when taking this steroid. Most expensive of the anabolic steroids
Tetrahydrogestrinone Similar to other banned substances Primarily to come up undetected during doping tests Banned by the FDA in 2003 The FDA stated that, “it was not a supplement but an unapproved drug”. Any sale of this drug is illegal.
Clenbuteol/DHEA Builds lean muscle mass, similar to many other steroids. More harmful side effects than others DHEA -banned by sports organizations. Have been marketed as anti-aging drugs. The athlete's use of DHEA is cautioned
Why Athletes Take Steroids Society today is very demanding Want to see athletes hit more homeruns, have harder tackles, run faster Basically want to see athletes perform better Athletes might not be able to accomplish the fans requestswithout performance enhancing drugs
Continued Feel pressured into taking these illegal substances Fans have put them so high on the pedestal, and expect a show each time they play Might let them down if they have a poor performance
Injury An athlete might take steroids because of an injury Most common reason why athletes take steroids Allow the athletes to heal faster than normal
Enhancing Performance Able to become faster, and become stronger when they use steroids with their workouts With steroids athletes: -increase the ability to play the sport -push past physical limits -stand out from other athletes
Speed Athletes are able to become faster, along with getting bigger(stronger) Steroids increase agility, which increases reaction time Steroids help an athlete be able to be quicker than his/her competitors
Power Steroids help athletes in all aspects of power with sports Examples: Baseball- run faster around the bases and to chase down balls Football- Able to break tackles or able to complete tackles Basketball- able to break out and run faster to the hoop than other players
Endurance Athletes are able to compete longer at their highest level of intensity with steroids Enables them to participate on a daily basis Allows athletes to strengthen body through every workout
How athletes take steroids There are two main ways an athlete takes a steroid; by pill or injection Both ways will produce results Injection can produce results faster, as the substance goes right into the blood stream to start working on muscle
Cycling When athletes take supplements over a period of weeks or months These period occurs with a break in between Can go on for a long period of time
Cycling Continued Athletes use cycling to decrease side effects Without cycling, taking steroids for a long period of time can produce serious side effects Athletes can be undetected when tested
Cycling Concluded By cycling, steroids can become more effective The steroid will be more effective, but for a limited time only Steroids will be very effective for the first few cycles As time goes on, they will maintain the current body status, but may stop increasing the body For most improvement of performance, an athlete must take the supplement for a very long time which may causes very harmful side effects
Stacking Stacking is when an athlete takes various types of steroids at the same time This can produce immediate and extreme results Can also bring harmful side effects much quicker
Pyramiding When an athlete starts out taking minor dosages of the supplement then in time increases dosages greatly Athletes will usually want to start taking extreme amounts, which is where the body’s tolerance is pushed to the limit If the limit is passed, the body will some times go out of control and this is where you will often see “roid rage”
Steroids In Sports -Steroids in sports provide athletes with an unfair advantage -It is unfair to those whose records and accomplishments were broken by a steroid user -Sports are a way to show talents and hard work -Using steroids gives not only athletes a bad name, but also the sport they participate in
Effects on Athletes -Organizations ban illegal substance use because it damages both, the sport and the athlete -There are many effects that steroids have on both genders
Effects -Effects are determined by the athlete’s physical condition before he or she has used the supplements -The more time the athlete has been on the drugs, the more serious, long-lasting, and irreversible, the side effects become
Side Effects For Men -Side Effects are different for each gender Some Side Effects: -High Blood Pressure(Lead To Heart Disease) -blood clots -strokes -digestive problems -liver damage - enlarged prostate
More Side Effects for Males -Loss of sleep is also a common side effect of steroids -Use of steroids in men can increase the risk of injury -Development of acne, usually on the back, for males using steroids
More……… -Affect male sex organs and gender characteristics Example: Infertility(Sperm Count is Reduced) -Gynecomastia, which is the growth of breasts(Irrerversible, only removable by plastic surgery)
Male Side Effects Concluded -Reproductive system can also be affected by steroids -Increased erectile dysfunction -Atrophy-which is the shrinkage of testicles.
Female Side Effects The side effects for women are usually worse Main reason women are cautioned against using steroids is the unfeminine form they develop if steroids are used Testosterone(Male Hormone)-Changes the way the woman looks
Female Side Effects Cont’d Spotting, or stopping of the menstrual cycle Develop more distinct jaw muscles and unwanted hair Behavioral changes Become more aggressive
Steroids in Baseball Baseball is the sport most currently affected by steroids There has been many cases recently among many players Steroids have created great controversy in Baseball
Popular Steroid Cases in Baseball Barry Bonds Mark McGwire Alex Rodriguez
Barry Bonds Currently hold all time record for most HRs in a single season and all time career HRs Accused of using steroids during professional career Status of records in jeopardy because of steroid usage
Mark McGwire Arguably one of the best hitters ever in baseball Held single season home run record 583 career HRs Caught and admitted to taking steroids during his career
Alex Rodriguez The player currently that has a clear shot at the all time HR record Future HOF candidate Admitted taking steroids early in his baseball career
Steroids in Baseball Contd. Although steroids were banned in baseball since 1971, the league did not start testing players until 2003 Penalties are currently not to severe, as players usually only receive a long suspension It has been thought about by the league that a positive test could result in expulsion from the game
Steroids in Baseball Concluded Steroids have had a very negative affect on baseball for many years Steroids are a problem that need to be wiped out of the league With much more severe consequences, players should stop using
Conclusion Athletes still choose to use steroids, even though there are countless irreversible side effects Steroids will be around for many years to come. Until doping tests can identify the most undetectable steroids, the cheaters will still be in sports organizations
