  1. 1.1 Symbols and Expressions Use order of operations Evaluate algebraic expressions

  2. Vocabulary: Variable: a letter used in math (x, y) that represents the unknown Algebraic Expression: has no = and contains a variable Substituting: replacing the variable with a number Evaluate: substitute a number in for the variable and calculate Grouping Symbols: Parenthesis ( ), Brackets [ ] or Set Notation { }

  3. Order of Operations • PEMDAS or can it be PEDMSA? • Parenthesis or any grouping symbols {[( )]} • Exponents • Multiplication or Division, which ever comes first from left to right • Addition or Subtraction, which ever comes first from left to right Can you think of a different way to remember it besides “please excuse my dear aunt sally” ?

  4. Why do we need Order of Operation?4 + 12 ∙ 2 – 8 ÷ 4 • Try this problem with order of operations • Now ignore the order of operations and just operate from Left to Right • Did you get the same answer? • That is why you need order of operations!

  5. Order of Operations by Rihana

  6. Order of Operation to Umbrella When we begin We begin together Parenthesis first now Please be clever Exponent come right next In line Then Multiply and Divide At the same time Now Subtraction and Addition Walk it out with Computations It’s the order of operations It’s the order of operations Ation, ation, ation, eh, eh Eh, eh operations!

  7. Order of Operations PEMDAS { }

  8. Order of Operations PEMDAS

  9. Order of Operations: PEMDAS

  10. There are always multiple ways to solve a math problem! Mrs. Rodriguez’s Short Cut to Order of Operations: -Underline until you get to an addition or subtraction and then lift up your pencil and start again -This breaks down the problem into little problems

  11. Example: 12 + 3 – 7 ∙ 2 + 8 12 + 3 – 7 ∙ 2 + 8 12 + 3 – 14 + 8 15 – 14 + 8 1 + 8 = 9

  12. Evaluate for the Algebraic Expression • Substitute what the variable =‘s into the expression • Calculate to its simplest terms • Remember to use the order of operations

  13. 5 times “t”

  14. Homework Assignment:Page 7#’s 16-40 evenRemember to show ALL work!
