  2. The Process: Application to Implementation • We tackled a real problem: • No Fluff! • How do we engage our most disengaged students? • What it they didn’t need to go back to class? • Benchmark #1: (7/1/13) Selection of students/outreach • Outcome: 10 Students were recruited • students who typically cut school • Students come to school, but cut class. • Became clear that the students who typically come to school, but cut class are the ones who showed up to these sessions (not the chronically absent students).

  3. The Process: Application through Implementation • Benchmark #2: (7/9/13-8/1/13) • UCD methods: • personal inventory • stakeholder discussion • Co-Creation • User persona • Prototyping • Outcome: • It doesn’t need to be off-site all the time. • It just needs to be relevant, real world, hands-on. • Enough talking, when are we going actually do something? They want to prototype!

  4. The Process: Application to Implementation • Benchmark #3: (8/1/13) • Developed a more nuanced approach to addressing these students who are disengaged and at-risk. • This program will address Back and Hispanic Males who come to school but often skip class • Student who are exhibit chronic absenteeism will be addressed in the next challenge. 

  5. The Process: Application to Implementation • Benchmark #4: (Mid-September) • Identify and confirm the final list of students who will be participating in the program starting in Late September.

  6. Community Impact • 60% of the students chose graduated. • 100% of the students who remained in the program for the entire time graduated. • Ongoing question: How do you help staff make a mindset shift from adult-created programs toward engaging kids in the development of ideas and programs? How do we let go of control?
