The Respiratory And Circulatory Systems By Cody Sugihara
The circulatory system • This system moves your blood throughout your body • Blood vessels are the roads that carry blood http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Human_Heart_and_Circulatory_System.png
Types of blood vessels • Arteries- carry blood that is filled with oxygen away from the heart, thick walled and elastic to withstand pressure • Capillaries- tiny network of blood vessels, nutrients and oxygen diffuse through the walls into the surrounding tissue cells • Veins and Venules- carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart from the capillaries http://www.examiner.com/article/penn-researchers-discover-unique-plasma-properties
The heart • Heart- pumps blood throughout your body, with out this you would not be able to live • Blood moves from the veins into the heart and then is pumped through the lungs and is filled with oxygen • The blood then goes to the other side of the heart and is pumped throughout the body http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Diagram_of_the_human_heart_(cropped).svg
blood • Transports oxygen, nutrients, water to the body and transports carbon dioxide and wastes away. • Plasma- 55% of blood is plasma, contains water, protein and minerals • Red and White Blood- red blood carries oxygen, white blood fights infection and prevents growth of cancer • Platelets- clots the blood when you get cut, it forms a scab over the wound http://chenected.aiche.org/nanotechnology/a-hitchhiker%E2%80%99s-guide-to-drug-delivery/
The respiratory system • This system makes you inhale oxygen and exhales carbon dioxide, without this exchange of gases you would die http://www.lpch.org/DiseaseHealthInfo/HealthLibrary/hrpregnant/0372-pop.html
System parts • Lungs- delivers oxygen and excretes carbon dioxide though cellular respiration • Cilia- tiny hairs that warm up air that you breath in • Larynx- contains your vocal cords • Trachea- air passage from your nose and mouth to your lungs • Bronchi- at the base of the trachea that branch into two tubes • Bronchioles- smaller tubes at the bottom of the bronchi • Alveoli- thin walled sacs at the end of the bronchioles, there are over a million of them
Exchange of gases • When blood makes a full circuit of the body • Getting oxygen from the lungs and being pumped all the way around the body and back • Delivering oxygen and minerals to the body http://askmichellebiology.blogspot.ca/2012/05/gas-exchange-in-humans.html
Smoking • Smoking makes breathing and can lead to life threatening cancer
