Warm Up: 2/10 • 5-7 sentences: Is Revolution always justified? • Get your homework: Close reading (and essays if you have them) out.
Objective and DOL Objective DOL Create an example for each of the 4 fallacies • SWBAT identify and explain the 4 fallacies of logic from unit 8 of the CTIL curriculum map: • Hedge what you say • Ignore the evidence • Attack the evidence • Insist loudly on a minor point
FALLACIES: Hedge What You Say Refusal to commit or give direct answers. Ability to ‘weasel’ out of mistakes, cover errors and guard what is said whenever possible. Examples: • “Did you do your homework?” Maybe… • “You’re leaving out a lot of details. Why are you being so vague?…” “Well if you had been listening, I wouldn’t need to explain myself so much” Think-Write-Share: come up with your own example of this fallacy
FALLACIES: Ignore the Evidence Ignore evidence to avoid evidence or not pay any attention to it as it threatens belief systems or vested interests. Example: A Christian says it is impossible for an atheist to live an ethical lifestyle without adhering to the bible. Therefore, when given evidence of atheists who live compassionate lives, they purposely avoid thinking about the examples. Example: the president wants to invest more money and enroll more children in government preschool programs. When research shows these programs such as headstart do not create long-lasting benefits for students, he still continues on with the plan. Why would he want to create these programs even if research says there is no benefit to the investment? Think-Write-Share: come up with your own example of this fallacy
FALLACIES: Attack Evidence (that undermines your case) When consideration of the evidence cannot be dodged, the evidence is attacked. How might this fallacy be relevant using the previous example? Example: If Obama said that the researchers who found Head Start programs (which he wants to create more of) did not measure enough data, were being paid to find specific results, or had flawed methods of research, he would be attacking the evidence. Example: We went to war with Iraq because we thought they had weapons of mass destruction. When it was revealed they did not, the government refuted all evidence that suggested we should not have gone to war, and were not willing to admit it was wrong. Think-Write-Share: come up with your own example of this fallacy
FALLACIES: Insist Loudly on a Minor Point Distraction of the audience by loudly insisting on some minor point. Few will notice the point as minor if emotionally attached to it. Examples: • A husband tells his wife she is extremely forgetful, however the only thing she has forgotten in 10 years was his 30th birthday. • The media focuses on a small nation that is refusing to do what we tell them, and rarely tell stories of the widespread malnutrition and starvation in the world.
