Your Neighbor The Sociopath
Sociopaths vs. Pyschopaths • Many people confuse sociopaths with psychopaths, when actually they differ in many ways other than the fact that they are both anti-social, personality disorders. • Psychopaths are more genetically based, and are “born with temperamental differences such as impulsivity, cortical underarousal, and fearlessness that lead them to risk-seeking behavior and an inability to internalize social norms.” (Psychopath vs. Sociopath) • Sociopaths are influenced by the environment and society around them, such as poverty, parental neglect, or delinquent peers.
I wanted to define the difference between between sociopaths and psychopaths because so many people I know confuse these two personality disorders and as I talk throughout the presentation I wanted to make sure that everyone knew who I was talking about when I would mention a sociopath.
Sociopaths’ success • In the book, The Wisdom of Psychopaths, Professor Dutton refers to a psychopaths and sociopaths’ success in a business is due to the fact that they embody the “seven deadly wins”, these “wins” are ruthlessness, charm, focus, mental toughness, fearlessness, mindfulness, and action. • Sociopaths want employees that will do what they want and that will follow the rules, so that they can manipulate them. And if there is someone that rebels against these rules and regulations then the sociopath as a boss will stop at nothing to tear them down and show no remorse when they put them in their place.
If I ever get into the business world where I am the boss I would definitely embody some of the same characteristics that the sociopaths carry because they obviously work, otherwise they would not be the boss or CEO of their businesses. I would also refer to these characteristics to others that are trying to pursue being a CEO because I know some people are insecure and can’t get through to being the boss on their own and so if they think about it as being a sociopath then they will succeed.
Sociopaths in Techonology • David Williams started a conversation on TED Talks website asking if kids these days are losing social interaction skills because of the excessive amount of time they spend online with social networks and video games. “in traditional social environments a bully could be held accountable and shunned or even defended against, in cyber bulling there is little if any backlash which can result in a feeling of immunity to the social norms, and as such sociopathic behaviour can be dismissed as trolling.”
I never thought about “trolling” as a sign of sociopathic behavior but after reading parts of the conversation on TED Talks I started to realize that when some people are online they think that they are anonymous and that they can say whatever they want to people and have no remorse because they know that they will get away with doing it, and that the people on the other end can’t do anything about it.
I just found this poem really interesting because it showed the perspective on a sociopath in a loving relationship with someone and it was more than just from a scholars point of view but it was if it was from a lover’s point of view and so I really felt the connection in the poem and thought that it really expressed strong feelings throughout it.
