Calder Bio • 1898-1976 • American Born (Pennsylvania) • As a young child, was always tinkering, building little things, making sculptures out of wire. • Studied mechanical engineering as a degree, then moved on to studying art in New York and then Paris • “Godfather” of Modern Sculpture • Originator of the Mobile and “Kinetic Sculpture”

  15. Your project • Using cardboard, you will create a stabile in the style of Alexander Calder. Think about some airplane models and how the pieces fit together. • Once you’ve built it out of cardboard, you will cover it with newsprint/art paste. • Consider the types of shapes he uses – are they geometric or organic? How do they fit together? • You have the option of adding in a hybrid element. • You will begin by making a miniature model out of construction paper (though your final piece will not be much larger…)
