CAPT Response to Literature An Overview
What is the CAPT? • The CAPT is a statewide exam given to 10th-graders in March of each year. • It tests your skills across multiple subject areas. • One component of the exam is called “Reading Across Disciplines,” which is made up of a Response to Literature test and a Reading for Information test.
What does the Response to Literature test look like? • You are given 1 hour and 10 minutes to complete the Response to Literature test. • Within that time period, you must read a short story (allot about 30 minutes) and answer 4 open-ended questions about the story (allot about 40 minutes).
What are the 4 questions about? • Describing the text demonstrating an initial understanding of the text • Interpreting the text either by analyzing a quote or how the main character evolves over the course of the story • Making connections comparing the story to other texts, your life, and the real world • Takinga critical stance evaluating the author’s craft (literary quality) and the message of the story
What can I do to get a 6? • Support your interpretations with examples from the text. • Show a deep understanding of the text by analyzing the symbolic meaning of the story. • Pay close attention to literary devices and techniques. • Find meaning outside the text. Your life experience matters. • Multiple interpretations are possible depending on how well you justify them.
