  1. Broadband with NGN enabling Convergences Chae Sub Lee(chae-sub.lee@ties.itu.int) Vice-Chairman of ITU-T SG13 Vice-Chairman of ITU-T FG IPTV

  2. Content • Media and Broadband • Requirements from NGN/IPTV • Key Features of NGN • NGN enables Convergences • Issues for Convergences

  3. 1. Media and Broadband Bandwidth Requirements Source: Teresa Mastrengelo’ s column in www.convergedigest.com • Case 1: 2 SDTVs + High speed Internet + Telephony  ~6Mb/s • Case 2: Case 1 + HDTV + VoD + PVR ….  20 to 100Mb/s

  4. 1. Media and Broadband Access Network Technologies FTTH: EPON, GPON 1Gb/s Triple Play Service FTTC/B: FLC, EPON, GPON 100Mb/s: VDSL2 100Mb/s FTTN: FLC, EPON, GPON 20Mb/s:VDSL2, ADSL2+ Data Rate 10Mb/s 10Mb/s: VDSL, ADSL2 optical fiber High Speed Internet copper 1Mb/s 1Mb/s: ADSL 100m 1km 10km 10m Distance from Subscriber

  5. 2. Requirements from NGN/IPTV Definition of NGN and IPTV Definition of NGN a packet-basednetwork able to provide telecommunication services and able to make use of multiple broadband, QoS-enabled transport technologies and in which service-related functions are independent from underlying transport-related technologies. It enables unfettered access for users to networks and to competing service providers and/or services of their choice. It supports generalized mobility which will allow consistent and ubiquitous provision of services to users. Definition of IPTV IPTV is defined as multimedia services such as television/video/ audio/text/graphics/data delivered over IP based networksmanaged to provide the required level of QoS/QoE, security, interactivity and reliability

  6. 2. Requirements from NGN/IPTV Important Requirements from NGN and IPTV • Support broadband enough for TV, video, audio, text, graphics and Data • Support Packet based transport (including IP and others) • Support QoS/QoE enabled capabilities • Support Security, Interactivity and Reliability in managed way • Support multiple broadband with unfettered access features • Support transport agnostic features for services • Support generalized mobility and ubiquitous provision of services • Support competition to service providers and/or services Requirements IP enabled multiple managed Broadband Accesses supporting Multimedia over Convergences (e.g. FMC, Tele-Broadcasting etc.)

  7. 3. Key Features of NGN • NGN= Service Stratum + Transport Stratum • Basic Functions= User + Control + Management Overall NGN Architecture

  8. 3. Key Features of NGN Addition of Service Components * Ref: NGN-GSIOutput Document T05-NGN.GSI-0067R1

NGN enables convergences Enabling for Convergences Limited Services FMC RFID IPTV Others BE IP Limited BB • Simple linkage btw layers with dynamics • Diverse and Flexible business relationships • Diverse business models and players • Simple linkage btw layers • Simple business relationships • Simple players

  10. 4. NGN enables convergences NGN; a Convergence Platform • Combination IP with Broadband accelerating intrinsic convergence • Service convergence: Web based service provisioning • Network convergence: IP over any broadband transport networks • Advanced Mobile and Wireless technology initiate business convergence such as Fixed-Mobile convergence • Broadband Fixed, Wireless and Mobile technology boost another business convergence, called “Multiple Play: Tele-Broadcasting” FMC Tele-Broadcasting NGN
