  1. SCIENCE CAMP May 19- 21, 2014

  2. Science Camp • Science Camp will take place on May 19-21, 2014. It will be at Prescott Pines Camp located outside Prescott, Arizona. The students will travel on buses, leaving and returning from Freedom. We will depart at approximately 9:00am on Monday, May 19th, so students will need to arrive at school at the regular school start time. We will return to school between 3:00 and 3:15pm on Wednesday, May 21st.

  3. We will depart Freedom at 9:00 a.m. on May 19th. • We will stop for lunch at Sunset Point. Your child will need a sack lunch. • We will arrive at Prescott Pines around 1:00 p.m. • We will call our school office to let them know we arrived safely. • There will be 4 teachers and 20 adult chaperones going.

  4. Your child will be assigned to a room with 5 or 6 other students and one chaperone. Your child will be placed with at least 1 friend in their cabin that he/she has chosen. • Your child will be with his/her chaperone on ALL activities and down time. • Boys and girls are in separate cabins and will NOT be allowed to enter any cabin which is not their own. • Shower time will be allowed in the morning and the evenings before bedtime. • We will eat 3 full meals each day and snacks will be provided in in the evening. Your child should not bring any food.

  5. What about students who don’t go to camp? Students earn a grade for the work that they do at Science Camp in each subject. Students who stay behind will be responsible for completing work that covers the same concepts taught at camp.

  6. Chaperones • In order to be a chaperone you must: • Be fingerprinted & background checked • Be a parent of a 6th grader • Pay $94 fee (which cannot be by tax credit) • Chaperones sleep in the cabins with the campers. • Moms of daughters, dads of sons. • Chaperones will be notified after Spring Break

  7. •You must be prepared to help students get to each activity on time •You will assist the instructors with crowd control and helping the students complete workbook activities •You may be asked to supervise a small group activity •You will be asked to help groups of students with kitchen duty (set up for meals or clean up after meals)

  8. What are we paying for? • The $150 covers: • Transportation • Lodging • Food • Activities for the 3 days and 2 nights at Prescott Pines. • Memories to last a lifetime! 

  9. What do they do at camp? Solarville – understanding the flow of energy through the food chain and the ways energy is used in providing our food Cycle Factory – learning about the cycles of air, water, soil and how human actions impact the systems Geocaching – students will learn the science behind global positioning systems and do a modern day treasure hunt Star party – students will learn aspects of astronomy with direct observations Dead to Alive Decomposition– using the inquiry process students will learn about what happens to waste over the course of time and experiment Challenge Course– teambuilding, communication, and compromise Owl Who– learn about the complexity of the Arizona food web Campfire – singing camp songs, hearing stories and making s’mores make true a camp experience that both kids and adults love

  10. We have several goals for the students attending Science Camp. Students will: Develop perceptions, sensitivities, and awareness of their natural environment Build a basic understanding of ecological principles and the relationship between each student and the natural world Work together and appreciate their own individual talent by creating positive social interaction among peers. Develop new, and deeper, friendships with other 6th graders. Have fun

  11. 6th Grade Science Camp Behavior Contract ***Students who receive 10 or more behavior marks in their agendas throughout the year will lose the privilege of attending the 6th grade Science Camp Experience! **If a student’s behavior requires “loss of camp,” parents will be called and expected to retrieve their child ASAP from Prescott Pines Science Camp.

  12. There is very limited cell service at Prescott Pines Camp; therefore students will not be bringing their cell phones. If there is an emergency, you may contact the Prescott Pines Camp office at 928-445-5225.
