  2. Water • Main nutrient in the human body • Tap water is most convenient • Other types of water • Spring water • Mineral water • Naturally sparkling water • Purified drinking water • Enhanced water

  3. Juice • Juice- 100% fruit or vegetable juice • Juice drinks (juice cocktail)- contains 10-50% actual juice. The rest is water, sweetener and other flavors • Fruit flavored drinks- don’t contain any actual juice

  4. Juice Cont. • Juice can be bought in the following ways: • Refrigerated section • Bottled • Cartons • Grocery aisles • Juice boxes • Freezer section • Concentrated in cans • Make your own with a juicer

  5. Coffee • Originates from Arabian/Arabic people • European colonists brought coffee to the New World • Coffee is now grown in Central and South America, Indonesia, Africa and Hawaii. • Coffee berries contain two beans which can be ground into coffee.

  6. Coffee • Coffee is made from the coffee bean • Roasts: • American or regular roast • French roast • Italian roast (espresso) • Coffee can be bought grounded or in bean form.

  7. Making coffee • Coffee maker has four parts • Water reservoir • Basket for filter • Carafe • Hot plate • Serve it hot right after it is made for best flavor • Ice coffee is made double the strength and poured over ice

  8. Tea • Came from China • Came to Europe in the 17th Century • British drink a lot of tea (high tea) • Types of Tea • Black • Green • Oolong

  9. Making Tea • Use a Ceramic or Glass tea pot • Put in 1 tsp of tea per a serving of tea • Use an infuser for loose tea • For black or oolong tea put tea in boiling water and let it steep for 3-5 minutes • For green tea don’t let water get to boil and let it steep for only 1-2 mintues

  10. Dairy Based Beverages • Smootie- blend of milk or yogurt and fresh fruit • Some people add peanut butter, wheat germ or ginger for added nutrition • Hot Chocolate/Cocoa • Milk Shake

  11. Other beverages • Punch- mixture of fruit juice, tea carbonated beverage • Sometimes sherbet, ice cream or fruit is added • Soft Drinks • Contain few nutrients • Diet drinks are made with sugar substitutes
