  2. Background Info. • Indie Rock is a sub-genre of alternative rock. This genre originated in the United Kingdom & United states in the 1980’s. • There Are two meanings to indie rock ; • Any rock music produced by artists on independent record labels & worked within underground music. • A distinctive genre of rock music, with a specific artistic aesthetic . • Indie rock artists are known for being in control of their music & careers, and also relying on releasing albums , touring & radio airplay for promotion & revenue. • However, in the early 2000’s , artists considered ‘indie’ started signing to major record labels a contradiction to indie aartists being independent. • Typical music instruments include the guitar, bass guitar, drums, keyboards & vocals.

  3. Historical. • 1980’s – alternative rock was also used as a term for ‘indie rock’. In the US indie rock was associated with artists that had a distorted -heavy sound such as Sonic youth & Meat Puppets. Many prominent indie rock record labels were founded in this decade including Washington DC’s dischord label in 80’ , seattle sub pop records in 86’ & merge records in 89’. • 1990’s – brought many changes to the alternative rockscene. Bands such as Nirvana broke into the mainstream ,achieving commercial success. It also saw the emergence of several defining movements with in indie rock including the lo-fi movement which was the making of simplistic (including home recording) music and not selling out to the sound of mainstream alternative rock. There was also the emo movement, which had derived from the hardcore punk scene in the 1980’s.

Artists. • There are a variety of indie rock artists including; • Arcade fire (whoses debut album reached number one on the US billboard & was nominated for a grammy). • Vampire weekend • LCD Soundsystem • Nirvana ( who broke into the mainstream in the 90’s achieving commercial success) • MGMT • Intepol • The killers (whose song Mr.Brightside was no.1 on xfms greatest songs) • The arctic monkeys • The klaxons • The wombats (my favourite band!)
