( so they can not carry measles, mumps or rubella)
Walk! Never run in hallways. Walk on the right-hand side of the hall no more than two abreast. Use handrails when using stairs. Watch out for swinging doors. Horseplay is not tolerated. Always check labels. Wipe spills, and place litter in containers. Follow instructions carefully. GENERAL SAFETY RULES
Report injuries to supervisor immediately. Do not use frayed or damaged electrical cords. Report electrical shocks to your supervisor. Do not use malfunctioning equipment. Report unsafe conditions to your supervisor.
Patients depend on us to keep them safe! • Transporting patients: (using wheelchair, cart) • Careful at intersections • Use corner mirrors • Stay to the right of the hallway • Use brakes on w/c and carts when appropriate • Go slowly • Back w/c and cart into elevator • Use safety belts • Clean equipment when done using it! 2. When using Oxygen: • Flow meter should be off when not in use. • No open flames / sparks • Avoid static – combs, wool products • NO smoking • Decrease use of products with alcohol: aftershave, perfume, rubbing alcohol
3. Heat Therapy; • Heat Lamp • Heating pad (K-pads) • Moist packs • Check skin color before and after applying • Check temperature of product • 4. Cold Therapy: • Moist Packs • Check skin color before and after applying
5. Electrical Safety: • Check equipment for frayed cords • Use 3 prong plug • Do not overload outlets
Do not touch electrical equipment with wet hands • Wear rubber soled shoes
What would you do? • IF AN APPLIANCE PLUG IS SHOOTING SPARKS AND SMOKING? • CALL 911. DO NOT UNPLUG IT!

First aid for electrocution: • Assess the situation (check the scene) • Provide for safety = do NOT touch the patient

Fire Extinguishers • TYPE A = Pressurized water • For ordinary combustibles (paper, wood, cloth) • TYPE B = CO2- smothers fire with powdered residue • For flammable liquid gas, oil, paints, cooking oil
TYPE C = dry chemical • For electric fires • TYPE ABC = combination • For ALL types of fires

Safety on a pediatric unit • Check on the children frequently • Side rails stay up on cribs • Always use side rails at night if patient is heavily medicated, confused or restless (no matter the age of the patient!)
Pediatric safety • Side rails must be locked securely • Keep sharps out of reach • Do not leave the children unattended • Keep tiny objects out of reach • Remove large items children could stand on • Doors to stairway or kitchen should be locked or unavailable
