1). Just Graduate • “The goal should be to keep the goal, the goal.” -Dan John • You’re here to graduate first, you can’t conquer the universe as a super senior.
2). Set Goals • Yale Goal Setting Study • 1953 Graduating Class • 3% -Written Goals • 97% -No Written Goals • 20 Years Later • The 3% Wealth > 97% Wealth • WRITE DOWN YOUR GOALS!!!!!
2). Set Goals • Professional • X Sessions/Wk • Continuing Ed. • Personal • Organizational • Be On Time • Training • % BF • X lb deadlift • Weight Loss • Write them down and be specific!!
3). Work, Work, Work (For Free) “You’ll find that everything in life exacts a price and you will have to decide whether the price is worth the prize” • Internships • MBSC, Athletic Evolution, Athletes Performance, Cressey Performance, CATZ etc…. • Mentorships • VolunteerPositions • “Can I come in a few times a week?” • PT Aide • Widely Available • Just keep showing up somewhere until they kick you out. • Everyone wants free help.
4). Work, Work, Work (For Money) • Turn your internship into a job • (Work your ass off!!). • If you’re a trainer, find somewhere to train people. • Who cares if it’s Planet Fitness!! • If you want to be a PT find somewhere to rehab people!! • Who cares what population!!
4). Work, Work, Work (For Money) • The 9-5 doesn’t exist anymore in this field • Think 7-5, 8-6, 9-9, 6-9 etc.. • Saturday & Sunday • There is money to be made in this field if you are willing to grind • 20 + PT sessions a week @ X/session =$$$
4). Work, Work, Work (For Money) • The 10,000 Hour Rule • Practical experience is everything • 10,000 hours to master a craft • Three hours a day (20 hours a week) for ten years. • Or for the crash course, 40 hours a week for five years. • 50-60 Hours a week??? “Learn in your twenties, earn in your thirties, give back in your forties”
5). Read, Read, Read • You must read a lot to succeed! • You cannot manufacture any new thoughts without new “raw material.” • Eventually you may have an “Ah-Ha” moment that leads to something profitable or life changing. • A varied, diverse input of ideas, viewpoints and stories are need to expand your range of thinking. • Without exposure to others thinking your range of thought shrinks. • You cannot stay current in your field. You need to read a monstrous amount of books, magazines and newspapers and you will probably still be behind. • Dan Kennedy on reading, From Alwyn Cosgrove’s Blog
5). Read, Read, Read • Personal Development • How To Win Friends And Influence People - Dale Carnegie • Today Matters - John Maxwell • Outliers - Malcom Gladwell • Crush It! - Gary Vaynerchuk • Strength and Conditioning • Advances In Functional Training - Mike Boyle • Starting Strength - Mark Rippetoe • Practical Programming - Mark Rippetoe • Never Let Go -Dan John
5). Read, Read, Read • Anatomy/PT • Anatomy Trains - Thomas Myers • Muscle Testing and Function with Posture and Pain • Atlas of Human Anatomy - Frank Netter • Ultimate Back Fitness and Performance - Stuart McGill • Bulletproof Knees - MikeRobertson • Websites/Blogs/Podcasts • Strengthcoach.com • Sportsrehabexpert.com • Strengthcoach podcast • SBcoachescollege.com
6). Write About What You Know • You don’t have to be the next online “expert”, just write about what you know. • Writing feeds reading. Reading feeds learning.
6). Write About What You Know • Blog • COACHKEVCARR.COM • REARICKSTRENGTH.COM • Submittowebsites • EliteFTS, Strengthcoach • Read/Contribute to Forums • Don’t be forum troll • Take part in studies • You are at a research institute! • Write for yourself • Training Philosophy “Act like an expert, eventually people will see you as one”
7). Make Connections • Is it about who you know or what you know? • Both! It’s best to know a lot and know a lot of people • “All else being equal, people prefer doing business with their friends. All else not being equal people still prefer doing business with their friends” - Henry Ford • Go to seminars and ask questions • Social Networks • Email • Facebook, Twitter etc.. • Blogs
8). You Have To Want To Help Others • Whatever you do ALWAYS UNDERPROMISE and OVERDELIVER • Go the extra mile for clients/athletes and employers and you’ll do great • Training/Coaching/PT is a service industry. • Continue your education for them • Your working to help others achieve goals and change lives • You cannot go about this job passively • If your in it solely for money/recognition then get the hell out • This why things like “The Biggest Loser” are a joke • It’s about profit and ratings not healthy results • Plus the trainers are absolutely terrible
