Keys To The City Anthony Fiti Southern Nevada Future City Competition
Introduction • SimCity 4 Software • Windows or Mac • Cities are judged on 100 Point scale • 84 points for SimCity • 16 points for Student Self-Assessment (turned in with inventory online)
2010-2011 Recap • Best SimCity model had a score of about 70 out of 84 points, most competition day teams scored between 45-55 • What most SimCity models did well • Utilities, Parks & Recreation • But the cities were still missing a few things • Two September workshops will cover how to build a city, what students missed and how to improve their cities
Getting SimCity • Use any copies you have already • Obtain copies through the Future City committee • Order extra copies • Purchase the game through SteamPowered.com (Requires Steam client to be installed on the computer, Windows only, digital copy, own forever, never lose it)
Learning SimCity • Start with built-in tutorials • Let the students play around in SimCity before starting the city you’re going to turn in • Have them create two small cities to get more familiar • Total SimCity build time could range from 10-25 hours • I was able to build a city that scored 76/84 points in 5 hours
It starts with… • Download the required predefined region template from the national website (medium suggested) • Copy the region file into the SimCity 4\Regions directory • Select the city tile in the middle of the other cities
Keys to the (Sim)City • Preparation and Planning • Large flat areas • Determine what zones you’re going to put where • How you’re going to connect work and home • Periodic Review • Have the mentor review the rubric and use it to evaluate the city and help the kids in the areas where they didn’t get many points
Keys to the (Sim)City • Micromanaging! • Students will need to effectively micromanage their budgets while they build their city • Use sliders to adjust funding levels of education, power plants, and health care systems as the city grows
