Congestion in the Market Place • Many cars, locals and tourists can bring Hawes to a standstill during peak times. • Delivery lorries and coach tours also add to the traffic.
Lack of Pavement • The “birdcage” an example of poor provision of pavement, causing problems for locals and tourists. • The disabled and mothers struggle on the narrow pavements. • Tourists parking on the pavements exacerbate the problem. • Many areas in Hawes have no pavement provision.
Local Residents Parking • Tourists upset locals by using their parking spaces. During busy periods locals may have to park a large distance from their home. • Locals requesting a parking permit, as well as heavy fines for those not entitled to park.
No Parking – At Any Time!!!! • A sign usually reserved for congested city centres is seen posted in an idyllic setting, demonstrating the severity of the traffic problem in Hawes.
Wensleydale Creamery • One of the tourist attractions of Hawes which attracts thousands of visitors every year, demonstrated by the provision of a large car park. • Hawes is also home to a National Park Visitor Centre making Hawes a “honeypot” site.
Hawes Traffic Management Strategy • In 2002 a leaflet was issued to the residents of Hawes following consultation with the local community. • Since then many of the ideas of the community have been implemented easing Hawes traffic congestion and providing safer walkways for the locals and the tourists.
Improvements in Hawes • Provision of dropped kerbs and introduction of tactile paving. • Improvements to the “birdcage” walk footway. • A new ramped footway to connect Gayle Lane car park to the High Street. • Traffic calming and a 20mph zone in the cobbled section of the A684. • Cycle parking, including secure facilities at some of the major tourist destinations in Hawes. • Passenger transport improvements at the National Park visitor centre. • Provision of traffic calming “gateway” features at the main entrances to the town. • The continuity of the footway from Gayle Lane to Turly Hill. • Various bus stop improvements. • Provision of continuous footway along the Holme.
