HISTORY OF CED • CED was established in 1980-81. • Architectural Engineering Department was established in 1975 in the College of Engineering and was moved to CED in 1980 when the College was established. • Architecture Department was established in 1980. • Construction Engineering & Management Department was established in 1984. • City & Regional Planning Department was established in 1987.
CED PHILOSOPHY • Develop interdisciplinary relationships between the professionals who share a common concern for the design of built environment • Recognizing the commonality, the college is organized as a unit with shared common facilities & resources • In accordance to this philosophy, students of their chosen specialty are allowed to share knowledge & classroom expertise via shared instructors, expertise & specialization

DEPARTMENT OBJECTIVES • To graduate architects with highly developed skills in the areas of programming, planning and design of buildings allowing preservation of the national architectural heritage. • To meet high international standards in architectural education. • Involve conventional as well as state of art information technology.
ACTIVITIES • Development of ARC labs including conversion of two design studios into Intelligent Design studios and establishment of the Virtual Reality Lab. • Offering of Short courses in CAD and Graphic Design. • Participation in Architectural Heritage Exhibitions and the CED annual exhibition. • Organizing an annual scientific trip for faculty and students.
DEPARTMENT RESOURCES • Model Shop: Supports the production of scaled models by students and faculty. • Digital Photography Laboratory: Used to document College events and support teaching activities. • Virtual Reality Laboratory: Integrate s advanced IT solutions in the architectural design process.
DEPARTMENT RESOURCES • Computer Aided Design Center: The center is a focus of activity for the college supporting teaching of design and other related courses. • Design Studios: Supports teaching of architectural design. • Intelligent Design Studio: IT design Studios. • Reproduction Centre: Serves the reproduction needs of the college.

OBSTACLES • Not having Graduate Program offers limited research and publication support to the faculty. • Absence of research assistants limits the possibilities in achieving a desirable level of research. • Absence of manpower to support in Design Studios and IT related activities.
CHALLENGES • Utilize the expertise and professional experience of each faculty to enhance the learning experience of students. • Devise areas of strength like: Theory in design, building technology and systems, IT application in Architecture. • Achieve a balanced approach towards advancing ideas and using technology.
DEPARTMENT OBJECTIVES • The undergraduate program aims at preparing highly qualified engineers who have a comprehensive and in-depth knowledge about different building systems and their integration for optimal performance. • The Program offers the option for specialization in one of the following specific area: 1) Building Structural Systems 2) Building Environmental Control Systems 3) Construction and Maintenance Management 4) Computer-aided Building Design
DEPARTMENT OBJECTIVES (Cont.) The graduate program of the Architectural Engineering department is designed to prepare highly qualified professionals and researchers in the field with a specialized and in-depth knowledge related to the design, operation and management of the various building systems. • Specialization Areas are: • Computer Aided Building Design • Various Fields of Building Environmental Control Systems • Areas of Facilities Engineering & Maintenance
ARE GRADUATE PROGRAMS Two Graduate Programs are offered: • Master of Science:requires 30 credit hours inclusive of 6 credit hours of Research Thesis work. • Master of Engineering:requires 42 credit hours inclusive of 3 credit hours of Research Project.

ACTIVITIES (Cont.) • Symposium on Energy Conservation was organized in 2002 • An elaborate Building Science lab was developed • A new Material Science Lab has also been developed • Special Smart PC Lab & development of Smart Studio is in process • Development of a specialized Acoustical Facility BAT Lab is in progress

OBSTACLES AND CHALLENGES • Sudden dramatic increase in the number of students and potential shortage of space (e.g. students labs). Solution: Space in the college taken for classrooms should be re-established as studios and lab areas. Difficulty: Recruiting technical staff for labs.
DEPARTMENT OBJECTIVE • Provide quality education in city and regional planning through: • Contributing to current trends in information technology and computer-aided planning education • Serving local, regional and national needs in this area through research, consultation, and community services. • Development of the planning profession by graduating students in city and regional planning.

ACTIVITIES (Cont.) • Exhibitions • Centennial Exhibition • Jabal Umar Project Exhibition • Hadeed Project Exhibition • Seminars/Symposia • A seminar titled by “Durham City Master Plan 2020 Vision.” speaker Dr. Nazeeh Zul-Kifl Abdul-Hakeem, from North Carolina Central University, Durham, USA,was arranged in March 2001 by the department. • A seminar titled “Environmental impact assessment and land use planning : Learning from the UK planning process and practice” speaker Dr. Habib M. Alshuwaikhat, Associate Professor, CRP Dept. KFUPM, was arranged on October 24, 1999 by the department. • Department is organizing “1st Symposium on the development of the academic city planning programs & Practice in Saudi Arabia” on 14-15 October 2003.
ACTIVITIES (Cont.) • Industry Contacts • Consultation of Dr. Habib Al-Shuwaikhat with Dammam Municipality. • Consultation of Dr. Saad Al-Mubaiyedh with Dammam Municipality. • Department trips with students • CRP Research Assistants attended a presentation and demonstration on Vehicle Tracking Systems and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) on 30 January 2001 in Al-Gosaibi Hotel • Department Chair • Department is holding Abdullah, Hamad and Ibrahim Sons of Mohammad bin Saedan’s Chair on affordable housing in Saudi Arabia.
RESOURCES • GIS LABequips the students with technical GIS knowledge for careers in a variety of planning fields and help the local organizations hire the personnel with hands on GIS experience. It also helps faculty in their research activities. The Unit has been utilized to offer regular GIS courses. Also many short courses in GIS have been conducted during the last four years using this GIS Unit.
RESOURCES (Cont.) • Space Syntax & Advanced Spatial Analysis Lab is a new addition in the department to meet the enhancing challenges in regional planning and up-do-date study facilities for the students. Macintosh computers are placed using the space syntax soft ware.

OBSTACLES & CHALLENGES • Low enrollment of students in the Graduate Program • Solution is to reactivate the Undergraduate Program. • Low enrollment of Saudi RAs • Solution is to improve the incentives for RAs and sponsor students.
