Family • Born March 12, 1953 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida • Son of Odel and Patricia Hiaasen • Married at age 17 to Connie Lyford • Divorced in 1996 • Married Fenia Clizer in 1999 • Children: Scott (from first marriage), Quinn, and Ryan (step son)
Education • Attended Emory University in 1970 • Graduated from the University of Florida 1974
Childhood • Interested in going to swamps, and caught snakes, also lizards. • Angry at witnessing the disappearance of his childhood swamp • When he was six years of age he had gotten his first typewriter, and he would write short sports stories • He got to make a high school newspaper called "More Trash"
Career • Was a reporter for "Cocoa Today", a newspaper located in Cocoa Florida • Became a newspaper columnist for the Miami Herald • Makes people laugh while thinking about serious matters. • Columns are still appearing in the Miami Herald today.
