What Is H.I.V? H.I.V is the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. H.I.V infects cells of the immune system, destroying or impairing their function.
Where did h.i.v come from? The earliest known case of infection with HIV-1 in a human was detected in a blood sample collected in 1959 from a man in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo.
how is H.i.v transmitted? Through sexual contact -- including oral, vaginal, and anal sex Through blood -- via blood transfusions (now very rare in the U.S.) or needle sharing From mother to child -- a pregnant woman can transmit the virus to her fetus through their shared blood circulation, or a nursing mother can pass it to her baby in her breast milk
Who is most likely to acquire h.i.v? Because of physical differences between women and men, women are generally more likely to acquire HIV infection than men if they come into contact with HIV through unprotected penile-vaginal intercourse. Women have a greater area of exposed tissue (the cervix and the vagina) than men. Also, small tears may occur in the vaginal tissue during sex. These tears are an easy pathway for infection.
What are the symptoms of h.i.v? Diarrhea Fatigue Fever Frequent vaginal yeast infections Headache Mouth sores, including yeast infection (thrush) Muscle stiffness or aching Rash of different types, Sore throat Swollen lymph glands
