The Great Paradox:The Board and Its Fundraising RoleSeptember 11, 2012
Let’s Begin… …With the Vision
What Most People Feel (including fundraisers)
Why is the ask so hard?
Because… -Money is a touchy subject -Brought up with beliefs -Personal -Awkward -Value of our worth -Fear of rejection -Want to be liked
What was your first lesson?
And yet we believe...-They’ll be better at it-They’ll get it-They’ll like it
The Harsh TruthBoard Members will not like raising money-from friends or otherwise-any more than you do
Does not mean a free pass
How do you create a board fundraising strategy and execute it?
Step #2: Explore All Roles -Giving -Connections -Event attendance and participation -Site visits -Donor engagement -Appreciation/Letters The most important ambassador!
Step #3: Determine Concrete Expectations -Giving -Getting -What counts -The amount -The time period -Event participation
Step #4: Put it in Writing -Job description -Recruitment/orientation materials -Board policies Recruit accordingly… and …Avoid exceptions!
Step #5: Tell Them -Before the vote -Before their first meeting -Ongoing reminders -Anytime there’s a change Energy begets energy…no apologies!
Step #6: Educate Them -Role as fiduciary -Give and/or get policy -Expectations -Importance of 100% board giving -About fundraising strategies -How to engage/ask
Step #7: Inspire Them -Organizational impact -The cause -Stats -Stories -Visits from those you touch
Step #8: Equip Them -Nametag -Tchotchkes -The elevator pitch
Step #9: Thank Them -For trying -For succeeding -Celebrate wins!
Do not try to fix a budget problemby bringing on new board members
