Here’s a bit about me… • I was born and raised in the Upper Peninsula and graduated from Northern Michigan University. I’m currently working on my master’s degree through MSU – boo yah. • I student taught and had a long term sub position here at Huron 2012-2013. • Taught English 10, Advanced Composition, and 7th grade Language Arts in Warren 2013-2014 • Returned to Huron 2014
I have an older brother in the Air Force and a younger sister studying finance and risk management at NMU (#middlechildsyndrome) • Best person in the world – James Patrick III, a.k.a. baby James. You’ll be seeing a lot of him this year.

English 9 at Huron • We will focus on reading various texts, and seeing how they relate to ourselves and the world around us. • Books we’ll read this year: • Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck • The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian by Sherman Alexie • Maus II by Art Spiegelman • To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee • Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare

You’ll need… • Come to class daily with required class supplies: • Binder – 1 inch or thicker • Tab dividers • Notebook/paper • These supplies are required -
You’ll need… • Pens/pencils/writing utensils • Your independent reading book • Any homework that is due • Any required text that we are reading • Your planners • Your student ID
Some general policies • Food in class – no. • Respect • Each other, school materials, yourself, and moi • Cell phones • When you get here, assume you don’t need it. • There are times when cell phones are ok to use, but please wait for my go ahead. • Attendance • I expect you to be to class and in your seat on time. • Excused absences must collect late work from me or ze website • Homework • Is due the next day unless otherwise specified
Independent Reading • You will engage in a lot of independently selected reading this year. • As we get rolling over these next couple of weeks, I’ll introduce you to the specific requirements of independent reading. • You will need to bring your book with you daily to read if we have free time at the end of class.
International Baccalaureate • Huron is engaged in a very exciting development as we become an IB school. • You’ll become familiar with what it means to be an IB student, learner, and thinker. • This kind of learning encourages students to take risks in their learning, and to take independent charge of their education.
