  2. The 21st Century Learner What key points did you observe from the opening video? • Today’s students are a part of the Digital Generation. • They are technologically savvy and globally connected. • Our teaching has to change. • We must meet these new learners in their learning environment.

  3. STEM – Day Two Outcomes for STEM Participants Participants will: • develop an understanding of key attributes for an effective STEM learning environment. • analyze STEM-centric unit and lesson components. • Examine STEM resources on the curriculum management system.

  4. Did You Know? Many STEM related companies employ a variety of Quality Management Tools used to share information as simply as possible. Common Doctrine • Learn • STEM Standards of Practice Framework • Do • STEM SOPs in your classroom • Teach • Others how to incorporate the SOPs in their classrooms

  5. Develop an OPL for STEM SOPs • How would you share information about one of the STEM Standards of Practice Middle School proficiencies? • Remember… • Minimum Words • Graphics, Pictures • Keep it Simple Did your partner understand the message you wanted to convey with your OPL?

  6. STEM BINGO • Mark key STEM concepts on your Bingo cards • Please do not scream BINGO during the presentation! • Hold your cards to the end of the sessions. • BINGO winners will receive a prize! 

  7. Three Interactive Elements of STEM Education in Middle School

  8. STEM Standards of Practice

  9. STEM Education

  10. Recall the STEM Standards of Practice • Learn and Apply Rigorous Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Content • Integrate Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Content • Interpret and Communicate STEM Information • Engage in Inquiry • Engage in Logical Reasoning • Collaborate as a STEM Team • Apply Technology Appropriately

  14. Key Activity 2 STEM eea 2012 Discussion Question: Focusing on the STEM Learning Environment, what are key classroom attributes that are essential to developing an effective STEM Learning Environment. • Add items to your Chart. • Organize your list of attributes into an affinity diagram (Teacher’s Role, Student’s Role). There may be overlap.

  15. Key Activity 3 STEM eea 2012 Discussion Questions: • What driving forces will support the development of a STEM-centric learning environment? • What restraining forces may impede the development of a STEM-centric learning environment? • Create a Force-Field Analysis.

  16. Did you know? You have been creating components of a STEM Classroom Learning System to support the development of a STEM-centric learning environment using common quality tools (brainstorming, affinity diagram, force-field analysis) for education! Congratulations!

  17. Let’s Take a 5-minute Break Gallery Walk

  18. STEM Classroom Learning System STEM eea 2012 • STEM Centric Learning Environment Attributes • STEM Classroom Roles and Responsibilities (Teacher and Student) • Use of common quality tools Every student should have the opportunity to access STEM Education. (Universal Design for Learning for STEM webinar)

  19. STEM BINGO ! Don’t Forget • Mark key STEM concepts on your Bingo cards • Please do not scream BINGO during the presentation! • Hold your cards to the end of the sessions. • BINGO winners will receive a prize! 

  20. STEM Education

  21. Project/Problem Based Learning “In Project Based Learning (PBL), students go through an extended process of inquiry in response to a complex question, problem, or challenge. Rigorous projects help students learn key academic content and practice 21st Century Skills (such as collaboration, communication & critical thinking).” Bulk Institute for Education http://www.bie.org/ What are the characteristics of PBL in STEM Education?

  22. http://www.bie.org/videos/video/project_based_learning_explainedhttp://www.bie.org/videos/video/project_based_learning_explained

  23. Example of PBL in Middle School Middle School Project: Balloon Car http://www.bie.org/videos/video/middle_school_project_balloon_car

  24. 6 Essential Elements of STEM PBL • Significant Content – Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics • STEM Standards of Practice • Driving Question • Relevancy • Voice and Choice • Revision and Reflection

  25. Time to Reflect • Recall the attributes of a STEM-centric learning environment your team developed earlier. • Considering the key characteristics of STEM Project/Problem Based Learning pedagogy, add items to your affinity diagram and force field analysis.

  26. STEM BINGO ! Don’t Forget • Mark key STEM concepts on your Bingo cards • Please do not scream BINGO during the presentation! • Hold your cards to the end of the sessions. • BINGO winners will receive a prize! 

  27. STEM Education

  28. Implementation Strategies • Content Based Infusion • Teachers provide learning experiences for students that allow for demonstration of the STEM Standards of Practice within a particular content. • Projects that Span Multiple Contents • A more effective method of STEM instruction where teachers collaborate across contents to provide learning experiences for students that allow for use of the STEM Standards of Practice in a holistic manner through projects.

  29. MS STEM Unit/Lesson Design

  30. Essential STEM Unit Components • Enduring Understandings. These go beyond discrete facts or skills to focus on larger concepts, principles, or processes. They are transferable—applicable to new situations within or beyond the subject. (McTighe & Wiggins, 1999)

  31. Essential STEM Unit Components • Essential Questions. Essential questions are provocative questions designed to engage student interest and guide inquiry into the important ideas in a field of study. Rather than yielding pat answers, essential questions are intended to stimulate discussion and rethinking over time. (McTighe & Wiggins, 1999)

  32. Essential STEM Unit Components • Content Standards. This section will list Maryland State Curriculum content standards from multiple disciplines that are addressed in the unit. • STEM Standards of Practice. This section identifies the essential skills and knowledge from the STEM Standards of Practice that will be addressed in the unit. • Connection to STEM Careers. This section describes careers in the STEM fields that correlate with content covered in the unit.
