Main Components of AB Domestication in Nigeria • Linkages with partner Institutions and farmers’ groups • Distribution of AB in communities • Training and building capacity for farmers and partners • Phenology and Selection of Elite female AB trees • Tree improvement (Participatory Germplasm Collection) • Nursery development • Scaling up of AB domestication to more states and communities
Partner Institutions for AB Domestication in Nigeria • Unilever (Project novella) • ICRAF • Farmers’ groups selected fromEdo, Rivers, Cross River states • Edo Agric Dev Programme (EDOADP) • Rivers Agric Dev Programme (RADP) • Cross River Agric Dev Programme (CRADP) • Cross River Forestry Commission • Sustainable Tree Crop Programme (STCP) • Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria (FRIN) • Rainforest Resource and Development Centre (RRDC) • Pronatura International (PNI)
Partnership Determination • ICRAF organizes stakeholder workshop with reputable and development institutions active in natural resource management and extension in selected states (pilot sites). • Selection of partners is based on perceived technical competence and financial capabilities. • Interested institutions approached ICRAF for partnership
Constraints in Coordination • Partners are sometimes not in cooperation and this could interfere with the smooth organization and coordination of tree domestication activities. • Partners delay in sharing their information with ICRAF in Nigeria
Lesson Learnt • Partners delay in giving feedback to ICRAF because representatives of the Institutions don’t take quick decision on their own. • Representatives of Institutions at meetings and workshops should include those who have authority to take decision.
