  2. Functioning Of Wastewater Treatment Systems The Primary Treatment • The process starts with primary treatment, where all the wastewater is collected in the settling tank and left there for some duration. • The goal is to give adequate time to heavier and solid components sink or settle at the bottom, this leaves only the lighter and the lightest materials floating on the water of mixed in it. • Once this has been achieved satisfactorily, the solid components are left in those tanks only while the water is collected and further sent for the secondary phase of wastewater treatment. ecoseptic.com.au

  3. Secondary Wastewater Treatment • The secondary phase in these water treatment systems starts to work on the deeper level as compared to the primary one and the steps are taken to break down all the biological content present. • This is done using aerobic biological processes and this one is a crucial phase because from there, the water becomes good enough to be released into the environment. • The reason is that here, in this process, the biodegradable contaminants present in the water are reduced down. ecoseptic.com.au

  4. The Secondary Stage Of Wastewater Treatment • Biofiltration – Using sand filters, contact filters or trickling filters. • Aeration – To increase oxygen saturation in the water. • Oxidation ponds - Utilises natural bodies of water such as lagoons. ecoseptic.com.au
