The Sugar Act • Parliament needed money to “protect & secure” the frontier. They decided to tax the colonists to get $$. • The British passed the Sugar Act in 1764. It imposed a duty (import tax) on foreign sugar, molasses, and other items entering the colonies • Inspectors searched ships and homes for smuggled goods
The Stamp Act • In 1765 this law placed a tax on printed matter of all kinds: advertisements, diplomas, legal documents, newspapers, and playing cards • Stamped paper or special stamps proved the printed material had been taxed
Nonimportation Agreements • Colonists signed these agreements in which they promised not to buy or import British goods • Colonists held many protests, some were peaceful but some were violent • The Boston Sons of Liberty began as a committee of artisans, lawyers, merchants, & politicians who opposed the Stamp Act
Samuel Adams • A leader of the Boston Sons of Liberty who fought for colonists’ rights • Harvard graduate; son of a local beer brewer • “If we suffer tamely a lawless attack upon our liberty, we encourage it.”
Quartering Act • In 1765 the British passed this law • It required colonists to help pay to quarter, or house and supply, the British troops • Colonists protested British goods. Many women held spinning parties to make their own cloth. Why?
