  1. South-East Asian Astronomy Network (SEAAN):An Introduction Hakim L. Malasan1 & Boonrucksar Soonthorntum2 1Executive Secretary (Bosscha Observatory, InstitutTeknologi Bandung, INDONESIA) 2President (National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand, THAILAND)

  2. The establishment of SEAAN • Proposed in the SPS 5, the 26th IAU General Assembly in Prague, August 2006 • 1st SEAAN meeting  in conjunction with Siam Physics Congress (SPC), Thai National Astronomical Meeting (TNAM), 22-24 March 2007 in Bangkok • Aim: To establish effective mechanism for nurturing and sharing the development and experiences in astronomy research and education among South-east Asian countries

  3. Motivators • Proliferation of astronomical observatories and growing of astronomy communities in the region (Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, The Philippines, Cambodia, Brunei Darussalam) • Commissioning of National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) in 2004 • Plan and construction of a 2.4-m diameter advanced reflecting telescope at DoiInthanon National Park, Chiang Mai, Thailand • The creation of International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA)

  4. Established in 2007 President: BoonrucksarSoonthoruntuum (NARIT) Executive Secretary: Hakim L. Malasan (ITB) Assistant Secreatary: M. IkbalArifyanto (ITB) • National representatives: • Brunei Darussalam : Norarfan bin Haji Zainal, KUPU • Cambodia : IngHeng, RUPP • Indonesia : Suhardja D. Wiramihardja, ITB • Laos : KamphoutPhommasone, LNU • Malaysia : M. Lan, Hanoi Univ • Working groups: • Radio Astronomy (Zamri Z. Abidin, NiponGasiprong) • Optical Astronomy (BoonrucksarSoonthorntuum, H.L. Malasan) • Theoretical Astrophysics & Cosmology (Burin G) • Cosmic rays and Solar Physics (David Rufollo, Alejandro Saiz, E. SunggingMumpuni) • Astronomy Education & Popularization (C. Kunjaya)

  5. Regional Astronomical Collaboration and Network • An important mission of SEAAN is to seek for collaboration both in national and international levels. • The collaboration, if ever put into action, will make possible for member institutes or countries to share information, responsibility in advancement of astronomy. • Moreover, the network will help increasing research capacity and building on achievements.

  6. Sustainability of SEAAN Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) among institutions within South East Asia countries (ITB-NARIT, NARIT-ANGKASA, LAPAN-ANGKASA, NARIT-UP, ITB-UP, ITB-UM, …) Organize SEAAN Meeting in every 1-2 years Initiate collaborations, research and/or academic activities among South-East Asian Countries (work together with OAD) Exchange Staff and students, support SEAYAC Website of SEAAN : http://conference.narit.or.th/seaan

  7. Structure of SEAAN Meeting (1) a business meeting where the committee (National Representatives, WG Chairs and coordinator) meets and discusses the progress of the network and plans the futureprojects (2) scientific presentations (talks + poster).

  8. SEAAN Meetings • Every meeting should be organized in every 1-2 years: • 2nd SEAAN Meeting : Philippines in Dec 2009 • 3rd SEAAN Meeting : Thailand in Aug 2011 • 4th SEAAN Meeting: Indonesia in Sep 2012 • 5th SEAAN Meeting : Malaysia in 2013

  9. South East Asia Young Astronomers Collaboration (SEAYAC) • To encourage interaction and collaborations between young astronomers from all Southeast Asian nations; • To provide an environment for interaction, not just in astronomy, but also in the social, cultural and interpersonal level; • To conduct regular meetings/conferences and other activities so that members would have exposure in attending and organizing international conferences; • To encourage future generations to take up a career in astronomy; • To promote interaction between young astronomers in SEA and other young astronomers worldwide; Chairman: Rogel Marie Sese (U. of The Philippines) National point of contacts: Indonesia: PujiIrawati (ITB) Thailand: SiramasKomonjinda (UCM) The Philippines: Erika Valdueza Malaysia: SitiJamiah (UKM) SEAAN ex-officio: Hakim L Malasan
