Magnet Roadmap (2017) • 4 workhorse magnets upgraded to 28 MW (in 32 MW housings) • 40-42T w/ 32mm bore, 36-38 T w/ 50mm bore • Handle additional energy costs with energy budget • Users can run at current fields 20% more efficiently • 2.8 M$ first one, 1.1 M$ each additional, 6.1 M$ total • Split Helix scattering configuration 700 k$ • Series Connected Hybrid completed and running @ 14 MW • 36T @ 1ppm homogeneity (40mm bore), 42 T (32mm bore) • 11.7 M$ + 1 M$ for high field insert • All superconducting magnet operational @ 32 T (replace 20T SCM-1 & SCM-2) • 10 mK dilution refrigerator • 2nd all SC with He-3/VTI 300mK-300K • 5 M$ ea? • Hybrid magnet being upgraded to 48T • Outsert to 11.5 T 15 T • Insert upgrade • 3 M$? • Coldbox cut apart for connection to new liquefier may be advantageous time • Infrastructure upgrades / replacements 7.3M$ • Increase user energy budgets 1M$+ • Proposal for 60 T Hybrid being developed • Roughly 7 times larger than existing hybrid (with existing technology) • 100 M$?
Instrumentation / People “Standard” instrumentation (one scientist each) thermodynamic probes (heat capacity, thermopower, etc) dilatometry / magnetostriction TDO / high frequency skin depth “PPMS-like” capability standard puck for resistance, magnetization, etc. plug puck onto probe, load probe, make automated / remote measurement use familiar “PPMS” like interface (QD is interested in helping to develop) measurements could be in 3rd shift or weekends initially use decommissioned 20 MW magnets (31 T, 50 mm bore) technician and scientist to develop technician to run, extra control room personnel (1 or 2), electricity budget Scanning Probe Microscopy Major research effort Start with SC magnet & build infrastructure 1 scientist / 1 postdoc
Facilities Enhancement: • 18 T NMR Superconducting Magnet; Portable Dilution Refrigerator & Top Loading Probes; Low nose, 1 MHz to 2.5 GHz spectrometer system. • Next Generation Probe Development: • Technical support to design and build high precision goniometers, broad band tunable probes, high pressure probes, and simultaneous electrical transport and NMR capabilities. Increased robustness of sophisticated probe configurations. (1/2 technician) • Series Connected Hybrid: • Development of instrumentation, probes, etc. to take maximum advantage of the opportunities offered by the SCH • New Faculty Hire associated with the CM-NMR Group: • Following the recent example of the EMR group, we propose to enhance the level of faculty and university involvement in the scientific and technical directions of the CM- NMR group. This includes the pursuit of external funding, pipelines for graduate students, and the enhancement of the in-house research component of the group. The promotion of better scientific and technical exchange on materials and problems of common interest in Chem and Bio magnetic resonance areas is also desirable. Condensed Matter NMR ProgramBuilding on the strengths and potential of a high performance program
