  1. U.S. Constitution Hovik Oganesian, Artur Ghukasyan Period 3 December 2009

  2. 13th,14th, 15th Amendments • The 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments all have to do with the freedom of slaves and the rights of citizens. • The 13th amendment frees slaves and the 14th and 15th gives all the citizens voting rights that shall not be denied. • These are called the Civil War amendments because they were written after the American Civil War

  3. The Executive Branch • Headed by President • President is commander in Chief, Chief Legislator, and Head Diplomat. • There have been 44 presidents. • Described in Article II of the Constitution.

  4. Legislative Branch • Article I deals with the Legislative Branch of government. • According to Article I, Section I, legislative powers shall be vested in a Congress. This shall consist of a Senate and a House of Representatives. • The Legislative Branch is responsible for making laws.

  5. Judicial Branch • Article III established a Judicial branch of government. • Article III, Section 1, places judicial power in one Supreme Court and various other courts organized by congress. • After laws have been made by the other two branches the Judicial Branch interprets and explains the laws.

  6. 15th, 19th, and 26th Amendments • The 15th, 19th, and 26th amendments all have to do with voting rights. • The 15th amendment gives slaves the right to vote. • The 19th amendment gives women the right to vote. • The 26th amendment gives 18 year olds the right to vote.

  7. 18th and 21st Amendments • The 18th amendment makes alcohol illegal. • The 21st amendment repeals the abolition and makes alcohol legal again. • Alcohol was prohibited for 13 years until the 21st amendment because a lot were getting drunk and can do bad stuff.

  8. Separation of Powers • The purpose of separation of powers is to keep on branch of government from becoming to powerful. • The government will not overpower each other. • Under the Articles of Confederation there was only one branch f government which made the central government very weak. When the writing of the U.S. Constitution was taking place they decided to make three branches to balance the government.

  9. Bill of Rights • The Bill of Rights was the first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution. • The Bill of Rights have to do with the freedom of people. • The Bill of Rights says that if a person is accused of a crime they have the right to trial by jury.

  10. Checks and Balances • To grant each branch power to check the power used by the other branch. • If there was no checks and balances the economy will bad. • Checks and Balances is made to make sure the one branch of government won’t get to powerful. One branch checks the other branch’s power to make sure its power is limited.5
