  1. What is sustainable development? • The Problem: we are using more natural resources than Earth can re-produce -> our way of life is unsustainable. • Sustainable development is: satisfying the needs ofpresent generationsso thatfuture generations can fulfil their own needs -> to live in way that is benefitial to economy, society and environment.

  2. What is “Sustaining our Future” (SuFu) ? • It is AEGEE Flagship Project for 2008-2009 • It is a project aiming for: • a bit more green AEGEE -> more environmentally responsible (youth) organisations in Europe • to raise understanding of the connections between culture, society, environment and our own lives • to inform about the importance of sustainable development • It is project run by 14 young people from all over Europe

What is a Flagship Project? • Every year AEGEE selects a focus to itself, a project that all AEGEE bodies can contribute to – a Flagship Project. • Since Agora Valletta (spring 2007)a Flagship Project lasts 2 years. • Flagship Project consists of different activitiesall around Europe: conferences, study visits, trainings, action days, publications, etc. • The last 2 Flagship Projects focused on higher education and democracy in Europe

We are 14 active young people from Estonia, Spain, Netherlands, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, Greece, Romania and Turkey. <- European Day of Enviroment think tank -> Scandinavia project PR -> Think tank urban conference Sustainability trainings -> <- think tank Follow up -> Danube project <- Fund raising Manager -> Projects Director (CD) ->

What is SuFu doing? • May 15-17, 2008 Pre launch: Youth Solar Days, Brussels • June 5, 2008 Kick off: European Day of the Environment, all over Europe • June 9-13, 2008 Conference “Changing Climate - Changing People?”, Aachen & Bonn • November 15-17, 2008 Sustainable Student Days, Poznan • September-December, 2008 Survey: European youth and sustainable consumption

What is SuFu doing? • March 19-21, 2009 Think tank “Create and In(ter)novate!”, Brussels • March 30-April 5, 2009 Seminar “Sustainable SCANdinavia”, Copenhagen • June 5, 2009 European Day of the Environment, all over Europe • August 15-21, 2009 Seminar “Danube – source of inspiration”, Danube Delta

What is SuFu doing? • September 7-13, 2009 Seminar “Danube – the most international river in the world”, Bratislava • October 22-25, 2009 Sustainability trainings concept meeting, Tartu • October 31-November 8, 2009 Conference “SuFu & the City”, about urban environment, Madrid • April-May, 2010 Presenting the results’ booklet

Also: partnership with IUCN • IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) - one of the biggest and most important environmental organisations in the world. • In June 2008 AEGEE became official partner of Countdown 2010 – IUCN’s initative created to stop loss of biodiversity. • By IUCN we were also invited to send youth statement to G8 summit in Japan. The statement can be found from our website. • In October 2008, in IUCN congress we presented AEGEE and our project to major sustainability leaders in the world.
