Race to the Moon • Soviets and Americans wanted to be the first to put a man on the moon • This would show the world who was more technologically advanced • Soviets led in space exploration for most of the Space Race • First satellite • First man in space (Yuri Gorgerin) • United States caught up and surpassed • First mission around the moon • First man on the moon (Neil Armstrong) in 1969 • Proved that the United States had superior technology compared to the Soviet Union
Berlin Wall • Thousands of Germans were fleeing from East Germany to West Berlin • Wanted to escape from Communist control • New Soviet leader, Nikita Khrushchev, wanted to stop the mass exodus • It was an embarrassment to the Soviet Union • Khrushchev has a wall built around West Berlin in 1961 • Keep Germans from fleeing into West Berlin • Guards ordered to shoot anyone trying to escape • Over 100 killed while trying to escape • Became a symbol of repression and the division between Communism and Democracy
