Data Start Start Data Stop Stop Asynchronous Sender Receiver • Asynchronous is not synchronized; that is, not occurring at predetermined or regular intervals. • The term asynchronous is usually used to describe communications in which data can be transmitted intermittently rather than in a steady stream. • For example, a telephone conversation is asynchronous because both parties can talk whenever they like. (If the communication were synchronous, each party would be required to wait a specified interval before speaking. ) • The difficulty with asynchronous communications is that: • The receiver must have a way to distinguish between valid data and noise. • With asynchronous environments, faculty and students are separated by space and time. • During the week, each member logs in at his or her convenience.
Data Synchronous Sender Receiver • Within a synchronous environment, faculty and students are separated by space but not time. • Designated time when all participants log into the Learning Management System. • Work is completed through online discussions or other forms of communication (I-Learn). • Communications software (Elluminate) are used to facilitate interactions among faculty and students (Chat).
How is the Online School Counseling Program at UC Unique? • The candidate remains within their school/district • University Supervisors and Mentors travel to the candidate • The program is on an open enrollment system accepting candidates each eight weeks • The Specialist in Education in Counseling builds on the Masters of Arts in School Counseling, requiring an additional 15 credit hours (60 total).
What are the Benefits of UC’s Online School Counseling Program? • The culminating Practicum and Internship courses provide extensive clinical experiences • Practicum requires 100 hours experience with/as a school counselor over the timeframe of a semester • Internship requires 600 hours experience with/as a school counselor over the timeframe of one - two semesters • The School Counseling Program is distinct from the Clinical Counseling program so that School Counselors are learning specific techniques to use within the schools
