Championship Leadership, Character & Communication The Good Ship ESSEX… Guard your thoughts…they will impact your actions…. Guard your actions…they will impact your habits…. Guard your habits…they will impact your character…. Guard your character, it will impact your destiny Talent levels do not always reveal a player’s future pathways… Character often WILL How do we (as AD’s, coaches & trainers) continue to develop it? 1. We need to ask ourselves….what IS Great Character & Leadership 2. We need to be INTENTIONAL about putting a process in place
Introduction to key 8 pillars What is great leadership? Different things to different people… Elite 8 pillars of great Character & Culture 1. Integrity 2. Work Ethic 3. X factor (breathe life into your team) 4. No Excuse Mentality 5. Consistency (never situational) 6. Coachability (eyes, verbal/physical assent, best effort to execute) 7. Humility (sportsmanship, leaving a place better than you found it) 8. Maturity
GREAT Team Culture is about Character AND Communication (3 pieces) • Grudges / Dislike / Jealousy (you don’t have to be best friends….but you must respect, even when…) 2. Pride / Ego (remember ego protected 2nd only to life preservation – self sabotage) • Social Hierarchy (biggest difference between men’s and women’s sports) • Talent Hierarchy (teammates often afraid to approach most talented player eg MD) • Age Hierarchy (freshman – senior) • Parents / Caregivers / Family / Friends / Entourage (accept the love, reject the advice) • Game Pressures / Results (especially when things are not going well)…when results at worst… • School / Life Pressures (H.A.L.T.) • Personality (some personalities have harder time sending / receiving, but Trait vs. State eg SGA) 10. Discontent with role / system / practice WHAT ARE YOUR TOP 3 PITFALLS? WHAT ABOUT FOR THE TEAM? CREATE SOLUTION FOR EACH
