Separated by Words Language Barriers in the Nursing Home
My photonovella will feature an elderly woman who is of German descent. She speaks her native tongue as well as English. • However, she is very old and has outlived her family. She lives in a nursing home.
The elderly woman is beginning to suffer from dementia. She is starting to speak her native German tongue instead of English • No one in the nursing home understands her thick German.
The elderly woman cannot communicate her needs and feelings with anyone at the nursing home • Few nonverbal signs and certain sounds are the only ways of conversing the nursing home staff.
Her inability to communicate causes depression, and even accelerates her dementia. • I will then have some things about possible solutions and ways to avoid this language barrier scenario.
I plan to create pictures that feature my drawings as well as clipped photos.
