  1. CHINA CULTURAL IMMERSION TRIP 2016 Good Evening and Warm Welcome! Su zhou Pre-trip briefing

DEAR PARENTS • Please ensure that you have signed in on the Attendance sheet (pls do so if you have not registered your attendance) • You should receive a verification slip with your child’s name and 3 NOK’s names/mobile printed on it. Pls check for accuracy. If there is discrepancy, amend the information on the paper and return it to Ms Ong Siew Ling before you leave this room. • You should receive a set of handouts on Items for packing/Flights Info/Emergency number. Please take note of the Departure & Arrival date/s and timing/s. Please raise your hand if you have not received it. • There will be an Q & A session after this briefing.

Objectives The immersion programme aims: To immerse pupils in a Chinese speaking environment To develop in our students the 21Century Competencies on global awareness and cross-cultural skills and sensitivities To enhance their understanding of Chinese history and culture To deepen pupils’ commitment and rootedness to Singapore

  5. We have 34 pupils for this trip, 22 boys and 12 girls. • 5 coloured groups • Pupils will wear the coloured cap according to their groupings for easy identification. • Each teacher will take charge of a group of pupils and handle issues/concerns.

Hand carry a haversack (provided by Travel agency) on board. • Wear a comfortable pair of track shoes (in good condition) & hand carry a jacket/wind breaker.

  19. Important Information I • Luggage bag to be checked in should be with wheels and lock • All pupils will carry a small haversack (for outdoor use) to board the plane. Kindly include the following in the hand carry haversack: • A storybook • A pen • Tissue paper/wet wipes • A Jacket • A small packet of sweets.

Important Information II • Do Nottake the following items on board the airplane: • Sharp objects (eg scissors, pen knives, etc) • Tools (eg chisels, knitting needles, etc) • Guns & ammunition (eg including toys and replicas) • Liquid items (eg hair gel, shampoo, shower gel, moisturizer, toothpaste, water bottle, contact lens solution TO BE CHECKED IN) • Other prohibited and illegal items

Identification • School will issue the following items to all pupils for easy identification • red & 1 other coloured- ribbon and 2 luggage tags for the suitcases • 1 nametag (see sample) with the child’s name / school name and the following information printed on the reverse • Name & contact number of the hotel • Contact number of the teacher – leader and ITT Global Learning • Contact number of the Singapore Consulate General based in Shanghai

Others • Passports & Visas • The teachers in charge of each coloured group will safekeep the pupils’ passports and visas at all times • Money (Renminbi) • Foreign Exchange rate: S$1 = $4.7 RMB approximately • Pupils can be given allowance of RMB500 (approximately S$106) (should be suffice as all meals are provided). This is NOT a shopping trip! • Every pupil would only be allowed to bring 100 RMB (S$21) out daily. • Get the RMB currency ready in Singapore.

Costing Breakdown • Per pupil: S$730.80 (after school’s subsidy) • Air-ticket, 3 meals per day, 4 star rated hotel accommodation • NTUC Income Travel Insurance – Classic Plan • Sightseeing and admission fees • Land transport • One Local Tour guide in China • Airport taxes, War Insurance Taxes, passenger Security Service Charge & Fuel Surcharge • Tipping for guides, drivers, porters, etc

  25. Important points • Learning to be independent • You are representing PHPPS/Singapore and therefore you are expected to be well behaved at all times! • To be a good team player with peers. • To be observant and alert at all times. • To seek teacher’s permission before leaving the group • To go to the washroom in pairs. • Always look out for each other/one another’s safety • Always be cooperative with Teachers and peers. • Be respectful to your teachers, tour leader and peers • Be proactive in your learning and Ask Questions if in doubt • Do Not Criticise something that you are not aware. • Packing own luggage in China (every night before sleep) • Accountable for own belongings at all times. • To be responsible for one’s actions.

  26. TRIAL MASS SMS: • School has sent out a trial SMS to pupil’s mother’s mobile yesterday to ascertain that the system is functioning and the mother’s mobile number is valid. If you did not receive the text, pls let us know after this briefing. • Please do NOT change the NOKs’contact number during this period (till 29 MAY 2359 hr). • From 25 to 29 MAY, mass SMSes will be sent out daily to the pupil’s mother’s mobile.

  27. VALUABLES AND USE OF MOBILE • No need for valuables such as expensive watch, stationeries, wallet, purse, jeweleries etc. • Allow to bring along a camera and mobile for use during sightseeing activities but to be responsible for these items at all times (Teacher in charge will take group photos for sightseeing and will compile into individual CDs for each pupil when we are back) • Allow use of mobile when in hotel to send SMS to parents in the morning and evening before they sleep. • Pls refrain from having long/lengthy long distance conversation with your child as they would need sufficient rest at night. • If any child is found to misuse the mobile/gadgets, Teacher will not hestiate to “safekeep” (aka confiscate) it for him/her throughout the trip until he/she is deemed to know the proper use of these items. • This is NOT a shopping trip! (100 RMB per day will suffice, all meals are provided)

  28. TAKING CARE OF SELF: • (before and during the trip) • Have a balanced diet (eat vegetables, meat/fish and fruits). Avoid spicy food • Consume more fluids to stay hydrated (esp plain water from safe sources, ie mineral water) • Take supplements in moderation (Vit C tablets or eat oranges) • Sleep early (refrain from SMSes , long distance call during the trip) • Do not stay up late (from now onwards and during the trip) • 6. Don’t engage in strenuous exercise/activities
