  2. 1741-David Garrick makes his debut as Richard 111 1660-Enlish monarchy is restored and plays are brought back 1616-Shakespeare dies Racine- wrote classic tragedies inspired by greeks and romans 1773-British playwrite Oliver Goldsmith opposed the usual sentimental comedy and replaced it with a more real, humorous laughing comedy Aphra Behn is the first proffesional female playwrite 1642-Theatres in England are Closed by the church who took over from the English monarchy

Characteristics • Mostly comedy - in the 1600’s manner comedy • They were ironies of social classes etc. • Moliere wrote comedies inspired by comedia dell’arte • David Garrick is considered the best actor of the 1700’s • In America colonies theatre started to evolve in the early and mid 1700’s • Laughing comedy was established in late 1700’s • Laughing comedy was a more raw, real comedy.

  4. Theatre Developments • The women wore very big, elaborate dresses. • The men wore tight stockings and big jackets. • Often very big casts. • Lots of music on stage. • Elaborate usage of the set. • Even had flying machines
