  2. Intolerable Acts of 1774 • After the Boston Tea Party • 4 Laws • One closes Boston Harbor • One cuts the power of town meetings ex: anyone convicted of murdering a British official would be tried in Britain • Quartering Act is strengthened

  3. Committee of Correspondence • Established by Samuel Adams • Aim is to keep colonists informed of British actions • Committees sprout up in many colonies- organize a meeting in Philadelphia to discuss what to do  called the First Continental Congress • Demand end of Intolerable Acts • Write letters and pamphlets when British soldiers try to enforce unpopular acts

  4. Minutemen • After First Continental Congress colonists begin to arm • Take on name “Minutemen” • Minutemen= citizen soldiers ready to fight at a moment’s notice

  5. Paul Revere and the Committee • 1774 and the Spring of 1775 Paul Revere was employed by the Boston Committee of Correspondence • Express rider to carry news, messages, and copies of resolutions as far away as New York and Philadelphia.

  6. Famous Ride • British troops marching to arrest colonial leaders and arms stored in Concord • On the evening of April 18, 1775, Paul Revere was sent for by Dr. Joseph Warren and instructed to ride to Lexington, Massachusetts, to warn Samuel Adams and John Hancock

  7. Ride! • Revere "alarmed" the country‐side, stopping at each house, and arrived in Lexington about midnight • Continued on to Concord where the weapons were stored
