Committee of Correspondence • Established by Samuel Adams • Aim is to keep colonists informed of British actions • Committees sprout up in many colonies- organize a meeting in Philadelphia to discuss what to do called the First Continental Congress • Demand end of Intolerable Acts • Write letters and pamphlets when British soldiers try to enforce unpopular acts
Minutemen • After First Continental Congress colonists begin to arm • Take on name “Minutemen” • Minutemen= citizen soldiers ready to fight at a moment’s notice
Paul Revere and the Committee • 1774 and the Spring of 1775 Paul Revere was employed by the Boston Committee of Correspondence • Express rider to carry news, messages, and copies of resolutions as far away as New York and Philadelphia.
Famous Ride • British troops marching to arrest colonial leaders and arms stored in Concord • On the evening of April 18, 1775, Paul Revere was sent for by Dr. Joseph Warren and instructed to ride to Lexington, Massachusetts, to warn Samuel Adams and John Hancock
Ride! • Revere "alarmed" the country‐side, stopping at each house, and arrived in Lexington about midnight • Continued on to Concord where the weapons were stored
