  1. Peeling the Layers Differentiated Earth

  2. Do Now • Fill in the blanks: • The Earth is like a ________________, because it has _______________.

  3. Essential Question How does density relate to Earth’s layers?

  4. You will be able to: Relate the elemental components of the Earth to their layers. Explain why the layers of the Earth formed in a differentiated manner. Construct models to describe and explain the formation of the Earth layers.

  5. Demonstration • A model of the layers of Earth can be shown using: • 200 ml beaker (plastic beakers are preferable) • Graduated cylinder • Vermiculite (must be extruded type used for packing or gardening) • Water (colored black) • Corn Oil • 10 flat metal washers

  6. Prepare for the Activity • Work in pairs.

  7. Discussion Notes The inner core is under such extreme pressure that it remains solid. Like the outer core, this layer is composed primarily of iron and nickel. • The solid layers of the Earth include the crust, mantle, inner and outer core. • The core is the densest layer because it is composed of mostly iron and nickel. The core is so hot that the outer core is molten.

  8. Discussion Notes (cont.) The crust is the thinnest of layers and is made of the least dense materials including calcium and sodium aluminum silicate minerals. The crust is relatively cold, rocky and brittle and can fracture during an earthquake. • Most of the Earth’s mass is in the mantle, which is made up of iron, aluminum, magnesium, silicon and oxygen silicate compounds. • The temperature in the mantle is about 1000 degrees Celsius.

  9. Discussion Notes (cont.) The asthenosphereis a plastic-like layer of the upper mantle just below the crust. Pieces of the crust, called plates, float on this layer.

  10. Wrap Up • How does density relate to Earth’s layers? • The density of each layer depends on what elements compose it and the temperature. • The inner core is solid due to pressure while the outer core is liquid. • The mantle is a plastic-like substance; floating between liquid and solid. • The crust is a solid and relatively small compared to the other layers.

  11. Check-in- Exit Ticket Relate the element with its possible layer of Earth (inner core, outer core, mantle, and crust) using its density.
