Background • Calls for support following a number of suicides • Meetings with SECPHO, SPINZ, CCDHB, RPH • Support for local ministers • Fono in Porirua at PIC church • Continued need identified in Wellington region
Goal: To Reduce Suicide for Pacific Youth in Wellington So far…. • Developed Pacific steering group (SG) • Worked with SG to develop Pacific principles of mental health promotion and action plan • Working alongside Pacific community leaders to promote mental health messages • Working to strengthen resilience and capacity of Pacific communities
Rationale • Identified need and energy to respond/support • Identified in RPH, HVDHB, CCDHB and MoH strategic documents • Pacific Health and Disability Action Plan • Mental health promotion messages and activities support individual/community wellbeing and help reduce suicide

Identified Needs • Self Esteem issues • More informal social settings– open houses • Young people need love and belonging – mother and father figure • Look at valuing of life for our communities • Focus on parenting • Young peoples input into what is missing in their lives
Steering Group – Goal & Objectives Goal: Mental Health and Well-Being is accepted and understood and practiced across Pacific communities Objectives: • Promote mental well-being messages and practice through our established organisations and services • Promote positive messages valuing life, for our children and our families • Promote better access to Pacific social and health service.
What’s Next? • Develop mental well-being messages • Scope services and focus group for Pacific youth • Training for Pacific Youth Leader’s • Pacific community fono’s around the region to bring young people and adults together to hear each other perspective’s. • To advocate for better access to mental health services for Pacific youth. • Ongoing strategies • Evaluation
