Codon: • Is a 3 base “word” that codes for 1 amino acid found on mRNA • Several codons form a “sentence” or a protein • The triplet code: • Each codon stands for a particular amino acid • 61 of the 64 triplets code for amino acids • The 3 codons that do not code for amino acids are STOP codons. (They end the sequence). • The codons are read by anticodonson the tRNA • **This coding system is shared by all organisms.
