ALTERNATIVES TO A 4 YEAR COLLEGE • College Now Program through Lane Community College and NEHS • RTEC Program through Lane Community College and NEHS • Career Pathways at Lane Community College • Enroll in a registered apprenticeship program through the Apprenticeship Program Department@ Lane Community College while attending NEHS. • Attend West lane Automotive Technology Program at Elmira HS while attending classes at NEHS

  6. #1 - YOUR STUDENT CAN TAKE • A COLLEGE NOW CLASS • The College Now Program thru Lane Community College allows high school students to earn college credits for Lane classes taken at North Eugene High School and other Lane County high schools. • The classes are taught by college-approved high school teachers using college course outlines and college textbooks. • Students earn college credits at the same time they are satisfying high school graduation requirements. • College Now classes are free! • By taking College Now classes, you save time and money on college and can start college while you are still in high school.

COLLEGE NOW FACTS • In 2007-2008, 5,215 Lane County high school students participated in the Lane Community College-College Now Program. • Each of those students have a high school transcript and a college transcript. • For one 18-year-old Lane County high school student, enrolling in Lane's College Now classes was a smart move. "I jumped at it. I mean, free college credits. There's nothing better.“ • By taking 38 credit hours of College Now math and chemistry classes on his High School campus, he figures he saved more than $2,850 in college tuition. • Career and technical courses, open to all high school students, range from automotive technology, construction, drafting, electronics, and welding, to business, computer information technology, culinary and hospitality services, early childhood education, and health services. • Juniors and seniors are eligible for academic transfer courses in art, English and French, math, science, and social science, and can apply the credits to other post- secondary institutions within the Oregon University System.

  8. #2 -Take An RTEC Class • RTEC helps fill in the gaps for certain classes that are not available • at some high schools. You may be able to sign up for these classes • through your high school. • Classes are held on the Lane Community College campus, at some high schools, and online. Trade Skills Fundamental is being offered at North Eugene High School in 08/09. • Most classes are professional-technical or technology-oriented. • Open to juniors and seniors. • RTEC negotiated cost is $100/credit unless other grants are available to offset cost. • School districts sometimes have targeted funds to help pay for these programs. • Talk to your high school counselor, or view a list of RTEC classes online at http://www.lanecc.edu/hsconnections/rtec.html • With the approval and help of your high school counselor, fill out an High School Partnership Referral form.*

  9. #3 Career Pathways at Lane Community College • A career pathway is a series of low-cost and convenient educational programs that give students the opportunity to advance to higher levels of employment in a given industry or occupational sector. • Each step on a career pathway is designed to prepare students to progress to the next level of employment and education. • Career pathways target jobs in industries of importance to the local economy. • Career pathways are designed to create avenues of advancement for workers already in their career fields. • Career pathways are designed to supply new, highly qualified workers for local employers.

  10. #3 Career Pathways at Lane Community College These are the Career Pathways available at Lane Community College: • Arts, Communications and Information • Graphic Design and Multimedia Design • Business and Management • Accounting, Administrative Assistant, Computer Simulation and Game Programming • Food and Natural Resources • Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management • Health Services • EMT-Paramedic, Health Records Technology, Medical Office Assistant, Nursing and Physical Therapist Assistant • Human Resources • Early Childhood Education and Human Services (Adult Development and Aging, Criminal Justice and Juvenile Corrections) • Industrial and Engineering Systems • Computer Programming, Computer Network Operations, Drafting, Electrician Apprenticeship

  11. #3 Career Pathways at Lane Community College Students in the Career Pathways program can earn a variety of certificates and degrees: • 1 Year Certificates • Career Pathway Certificates • Related Certificates of Completion • Associate of Applied Science Degree • Transfer Associate Degree for 2 year or 4 year programs • Additional Degree Opportunities *To learn more about Career Pathways at Lane Community College, see your counselor or Liz Rommel, School to Career Coordinator in the Counseling Center at North Eugene High.

  12. #4–Enroll in Registered Apprenticeship Training • Apprenticeship is a structured system of supervised training leading to certification in a designated trace, occupation, or craft. • Apprentices learn the technical and theoretical aspects of a highly skilled occupation while being sponsored by individual employers. • The apprenticeship agreement combines both the on-the-job experience and classroom related training instruction over two to four years. A minimum of 144 hours of related training per year is recommended for several trades.

  13. #4–Enroll in Registered ApprenticeshipTraining • Interested students may contact the Trade Coordinator listed in the Apprenticeship brochure from Lane Community College or you can contact Apprenticeship Coordinator, Colleen Cairney at www.cairneyc@lanecc.edu • In most cases minimum qualifications for an apprenticeship include: • a high school diploma or G.E.D., • a minimum of a “C” grade for one year of high school algebra (or equivalent), • applicant must be at least 18 years of age. • Apprenticeship is more than just getting a job; it’s a career choice and commitment!

  14. #5 –Attend the West Lane Automotive Technology Program at Elmira High School • West Lane Automotive Academy is a professional level training program for high school students interested in and committed to pursuing a career in automotive technology. The program is housed at WLTLC auto facility at Elmira High School. • This is a two year program targeting 11th or 12th grade students • Students interested in the Auto Academy only, will continue their regular enrollment at their home high school. • In order to be considered for placement in the program, students must apply for admission to the program each spring – if able. • Students will be selected based upon meeting prerequisites and application data. • There are only a certain number of positions available, when those are filled, interested students will be placed upon a waiting list.

  15. #5 –Attend the West Lane Automotive Technology Program at Elmira High School • The goal of the program is for students to participate in a pathway leading to completion of an Associate Degree program and professional employment in the automotive field. • The program will offer high school credit through West Lane Technical Learning Center. This will be 1 credit per semester (two period block) for a total of 4 credits for a two year completion. These are elective/applied arts (Career and Technical ) credits. • This program will have a direct articulation with the LCC Automotive Technician Program. Students will earn college credit through this agreement at no additional cost to students. Students completing the WLTLC program will have the opportunity to complete the first year credits of the Associate Degree Program. • Students must provide their own transportation to and from their home high school and must maintain consistent timely attendance in order to remain in the program.

(Career Information System) What can you do with Oregon CIS? • Students can create an online My Career Planning Portfolio to store their personal information • Student portfolios is accessible throughout their time at NEHS and into college • Students must keep track of the username and password they create in order to access their online My Career Planning portfolio through Oregon CIS • Students identify skills they enjoy in day to day life • Students learn how the skills align with occupations you want to explore • Students explore occupations, wages, training or education required and the outlook for selected occupations

  19. Oregon C.I.S. (Career Information System) What can you do with Oregon CIS? • Students may explore programs of study, financial aid, find schools that offer programs of study • Students learn about admission requirements for schools or programs of study • Student information entered in the personal section may be used to create a resume • Students at North may use Oregon C.I.S. to complete their Education Plan and Profile – a requirement for graduation from high school in Oregon • Questions? Career Exploration At North Eugene High School • Enroll in one of the following Certificate of Advanced Mastery programs: Hospitality and Tourism, Health Services, Human Resources or the Industry and Engineering focus area. • Students within a CAM may also earn dual credit at North and/or Lane Community College and/or Oregon Institute of Technology and save money and time • Students must complete their Senior Project and Internship in a career area while attending classes at NEHS and earn credit for their Senior Project which is required for graduation

  21. Career Exploration At North Eugene High School • Job Shadow and/or Worksite Tours in a variety of career areas. • Students spend two to four hours at a pre-arranged worksite/business exploring a career or careers they are interested in and find out detailed information about the types of high school courses they should take, what type of training or advanced courses they would need to achieve their goals. • For more information about Career Exploration, contact School to Career Coordinator, Liz Rommel in the North Counseling Center at 687-4518 or e-mail: rommel@4j.lane.edu
