  2. What is an algebraic expression? • It is made up of signs and symbols of algebra. • Arabic numerals • literal numbers • the signs of operation • +,-,/,*,=

  3. What is the variable? • A letter that represents a value in an algebraic expression. • X+4- the variable is X and X=7 • Now you need to solve the problem.

  4. Solve X+4 if X= 7 • Therefore you would need to insert the number 7 where X is if X=7. • So 7+4=? • 11 is the answer

  5. Congratulations • You have just solved an algebraic expressing with one variable. • Other problems may tougher and will use other signs such as subtraction, multiplication, and division. • You will still apply the same concepts you did with problem. • Now you are ready to move on to the next step in math education.
