Extra Information • Fungi live everywhere , in the air , in water , on land , in soil , and in and on plants and animals. Some are microscopic and others are big as a thousand acres. Mycologists believe there are millions and they have found 5 percent.
How it Obtains Nutrients • Fungi obtains nutrients by absorption. Saprophytic fungi secrete enzymes to break down dead organic matter in recycling. Parasitic fungi obtain nutrients from living hosts.
Cell Wall • Fungi cell walls are made mostly of carbohydrate chitin.
Asexual and Sexual Reproduction in Fungi • Fungi can reproduce sexually and asexually. They mostly reproduce asexually if their eukaryotes. The sexual state is referred to as teleomorph . (perfect , meiotic)The asexual state of a fungus is referred to as anamorph. (imperfect , mitotic)
Classification of Fungi • Domain Phylum Class Order Family Domineering King Phillip Can Order Five Green Shirts • Eukarya -mycota -mycetes -ales --aceae
What Fungi is • Fungi is a unicellular eukaryotic non-vascular organism. Fungi are heterotrphic and autotrophic . Most fungi store their food as glycogen. Has a nucleus.
The Effect of a Lack of Chlorophyll Not dependent on light. Can occupy dark habitats. Can grow in any direction. Can invade the interior of the substrate with absorptive filaments.
Characteristics • Most are many-celled and some are one-celled organisms. • Cells have a membrane around the nucleus. • Get nutrients and energy by absorbing/digesting the surface they live on.
