Abstract • A short summary • Write it last. This study explores the reproductive attitudes, contraceptive use, demand for family planning and related topics of a representative sample of the female population of reproductive age resident in a Refugee Camp in the Gaza Strip. A cluster sample of 841 resident women of reproductive age (15±49 years) was interviewed in their homes. Univariate and multivariate statistical analyses were performed using BMDP software. 98% of the interviewees favour family planning and 88% plan to use a contraceptive in the future. However, 52% of the women at risk do not use any contraception because of their husband's opposition, fear of side effects or lack of knowledge. The risk of having seven or more children is positively associated with a woman's low educational level and husband's desire for more than seven children. Despite favourable attitudes regarding family planning, there is ignorance and the prevalence of contraception use is low. There is a gap between fertility preference and achievement. Introduction – Why did we do what we did? Describe the purpose of the survey. • Why did you decide to do this? • What has gone before? • Keep in mind, the literature review should be concise. • Why was this study needed? • Why is it important? • What is the unanswered question? Workshop V: Developing Writing Skills for Sharing Project Results Outline of a Scientific Article
Methods– What did we do, and how did we do it? Use information from the study protocol. • What type of study did you do? Don’t describe standard methods in detail, use references. • What approval process did you follow? • How was the sample selected? • Who were the interviewers? • What type of questionnaire was administered? How were respondents selected? • How was the statistical analysis done? Workshop V: Developing Writing Skills for Sharing Project Results Outline of a Scientific Article
Results – What did we find? • Start with basic descriptive data. • The text should tell the story. • The Tables should give the evidence. • The Figures illustrate the highlights. • Don’t include just percentages and “p” values, give raw numbers as well as confidence intervals. • Report the cross-tabulations that you indicated in your dummy tables. Discussion – What does it all mean? • What is your overall finding? • What are the strengths and weaknesses of the study in relation to other studies? • What might the study mean for decision-makers? • What questions remain unanswered – and what might be studied next?
