Chapter 5, Section 1 What Causes Climate?
What is Climate? • Climate – year-after-year conditions of temperature, precipitation, winds and clouds in an area
Microclimate: a small area of climate conditions that differ from those around it
What factors affect temperature? • LATITUDE • ALTITUDE • DISTANCE FROM BODIES OF WATER • OCEAN CURRENTS
Are the lines of Latitude broken down into different zone? • Tropical Zone: area near the equator, between 23.5 degrees N and 23.5 degrees S latitude • Polar Zones: extend from about 66.5 to 90 degrees N and 66.5 to 90 degrees S latitude • Temperate Zones: Zone between the Tropical and Polar Zones
Does distance from a body of water affect climate? • Marine Climates: climate of some coastal regions, with relatively warm winters and cool summers • Continental Climates: climate of the centers of continents, with cold winters and warm or hot summers
What are the main factors of precipitation? • PREVAILING WINDS • PRESENCE OF MOUNTAINS • SEASONAL WINDS
Mountain ranges and Wind • Windward: the side of a mountain range that face the oncoming wind • Leeward: the side of a mountain range that faces away from the oncoming wind
Seasonal Winds • Monsoons: sea or land breeze over a large region that changes direction with the seasons
What causes seasons? • The tilt of Earth’s axis as Earth travels around the sun causes seasons.
