  1. Keck LGS AO Planning Workshop December 5, 2004

  2. AO Working Group Strategic Recommendations • Improved performance of the present AO systems • Completion of the LGS system & associated instrumentation • Next generation, advanced AO systems The Observatory’s 30-year plan’s strategic science goals highlight adaptive optics and interferometry.

  3. Keck AO Future: AOWG Roadmap Design studies funded by CfAO Currently in process $2M proposal submitted to Keck Foundation Planned for FY04 Preliminary requirements only – Needs design funds

  4. AOWG Direction Background • The AOWG should take an active role in providing input to the Keck AO group on issues such as science verification and characterization, engineering science, and LGS AO operation. This input should be in collaboration with the Keck AO team and the CfAO-funded LGS AO engineering science demonstration and optimization team. Topics to be covered • Overview of Keck AO LGS accomplishments to date • Discussions of appropriate future milestones • Development of a pre-instrument release characterization plan • Discussion of engineering science verification • Overview of present and future operations • Discussions of operations and scheduling issues

  5. Introductions AOWG members • Mike Brown (chair), Jim Beletic, Rich Dekany, James Larkin, Mike Liu, Bruce Macintosh, Keith Matthews, Claire Max, Mitch Troy LGS AO engineering science team (CfAO funded) • David Le Mignant (PI), Antonin Bouchez, Elinor Gates, Don Gavel, Francois Rigaut, Peter Wizinowich LGS AO engineering team • Peter Wizinowich (lead), Antonin Bouchez, Jason Chin, Scott Hartman, Erik Johansson, Robert Lafon, David Le Mignant, Paul Stomski, Doug Summers, Marcos van Dam Other Observatory members • Sean Adkins, Randy Campbell, Fred Chaffee, Bob Goodrich, Hilton Lewis
