Solar Energy By Chopper Rooney
How It Is Produced • It is energy produced from the sun • Photovoltaic solar panels collect a small amount of dc currents from semiconductor material, then photons of light energy cause electrons to be displaced resulting in an electrical current flow • It takes about 1 square meter of photovoltaic cells to produce 120 watts of electricity at the peak of day’s sunlight
Pros • Pros: Renewable, Abundant, Sustainable, Environmentally Friendly, Good Availability, Reduces Electricity Costs, Silent, Low Maintenance, Technology is Improving
Cons • Cons: Expensive, Intermittent, Energy Storage is Expensive, Requires Space, and Daylight is Needed to Produce Energy
Passive Solar • A passive solar system converts sunlight into thermal energy without using pumps or fans • Passive Solar systems don't contain moving or electrical parts • An example of passive solar is a greenhouse
Active Solar • Light strikes the black metal surface of a solar collector and it is converted into thermal energy. Water is pumped through the pipes to absorb the thermal energy, and then the heated water goes to a storage tank where pumps and fans distribute the heat
Facts • Solar energy is the main source of energy for all life forms • Solar power is one of a few sources of energy that is completely free • Solar energy has been used for over 2700 years • Space missions have been using solar energy to power spaceships since 1958 • The battery of a solar panel can last up to five days
ConclusionWe Should Switch To Solar Energy Because: • Solar systems save money by not causing you to buy electricity • The energy source is easily maintained • It is very reliable and it produces a steady stream of energy when the sun is shining • Almost all states offer grants and reduction in sales tax if you have a renewable source of energy • It increases the value of your house
