2. Sonnet 116 – William Shakespeare Let me not to the marriage of true mindsAdmit impediments. 3. Sonnet 116 Analysis • This sonnet is about love in its purest form. It praises the glories of what two lovers have found, and who have come together for a relationship of understanding and trust. In the first couple lines, the narrator’s love is very strong for his lover.

4. Sonnet 116 Analysis Cont. • Lines 5 and 6, “O no! it is an ever-fixed mark/That looks on tempests and is never shaken” states that love is a fixed mark, or something solid, that will survive any crisis. Lines 11 and 12, “Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,/But bears it out even to the edge of doom” state that his love is permanent, and will be till the ‘edge of doom’ or death.

6. Suspicious Minds Analysis • In this song, ‘The King’ talks about his relationship, and how suspicion is killing it. He does express that they cannot go on living with the suspicion in each other, “We can't go on together with suspicious minds.” The main theme of this song is to not be suspicious, because Elvis loves you...But really it means that in a relationship if the two people love each other they should not be suspicious of every little thing because it will ruin the relationship.

7. Sonnet 116 updated to Suspicious Minds • Both the sonnet and the song are about love, and both connect to themes of suspicion (or any obstacle), and overcoming it in a relationship. In the sonnet, the lines “Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,/But bears it out even to the edge of doom” talks about a love that is permanent, which is present in Elvis’ lines, “I can't walk out because I love you too much baby.” He is saying that even though things are bad, I still love you too much to leave, which is like the permanent love Shakespeare wrote about.

8. Sonnet 116 updated to Suspicious Minds Cont. Another way Sonnet 116 was updated into Elvis Presley’s song, Suspicious Minds is the theme of overcoming obstacles. “O no! it is an ever-fixed mark/That looks on tempests and is never shaken.” Shakespeare writes that love is this ‘ever-fixed mark’ that will survive any crisis. Elvis inputs this into his song by telling the woman he is in love with that the relationship can’t go on with this suspicion, “Oh let our love survive, I’ll dry the tears from your eyes. Let's don't let a good thing die, when honey, you know I've never lied to you.” Both the sonnet and the song are about relationships, but in Elvis’ case, he is feeling the theme of Shakespeare’s sonnet (that love will over-come obstacles) and is hoping his love one will realize it too.
